Timothy M. Buie, M.D. is an internationally recognized Pediatric Gastroenterologist and Autism medical specialist at Boston Children’s Hospital and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. Prior to joining Boston Children's Hospital, at Massachusetts General Hospital for Children. He was the Director of Gastrointestinal and Nutrition at Massachusetts General Hospital’s Lurie Center for Autism. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri School of Medicine. He completed a combined Internal Medicine/Pediatrics residency at Bridgeport Hospital. He completed fellowship training in Pediatric Gastroenterology at Yale University School of Medicine.Dr. Buie served on the Interagency Coordinating Committee for Autism advisory board for the National Institutes of Health. He advised the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. He has served on the Harvard Medical School TEAMS clinical advisory board (Targeted Education Autism for Management across Medical Specialties) aimed at teaching clinical providers autism management strategies.Dr. Buie has published a variety of papers and book chapters characterizing gastrointestinal problems in children with autism and developmental disorders. His work includes translational research of the intestinal microbiome and the metabolic effects of the microbiome in autism and inflammatory disease. He participated in the development of multicenter collaboration of research in autism and with others helped to develop research questionnaires aimed at assessing GI problems in autism.Dr. Buie has been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, PBS, BBC and other media discussing gastrointestinal symptoms, diet and nutrition, and the microbiome differences seen in individuals with autism. He is featured on AutismSpeaks.org and YouTube in an online medical video series entitled “Office Hours with GI Specialist Tim Buie” developed and co-produced with Autism Speaks. He received the Margaret Bauman Award for Autism Care presented in 2017 and 2010. He was named Professional of the Year by the Autism Society of America in 2010. He received the Partners in Excellence Award in 2014. He received the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine’s Take Wing Award in 2015 honoring career achievements and professional excellence.
