For the actuation of continuously variable transmissions (CVT’s) a servo-actuation system (SAS) was designed. With this system the clamping pressure and the CVT ratio can be controlled independently. By using electric actuation (power on demand), the energy consumption of the CVT actuation can be decreased significantly. The feedback control performance of the clamping pressure has however never been sufficient to compete with traditional CVT actuation systems and was therefore unsuitable for automotive applications. After improving the SAS system it has also been tested on a medium duty truck. During this project I came in contact with a broad aspect of engineering. Because of the small team I was also responsible for all the issues arising within a project. This included implementing and improving on a hydraulic setup, solving electrical issues such as shielding as well as designing a software layout for controlling a vehicle.Responsibilities: • Increase control performance on the SAS• Meet the performance criteria for CVT’s as specified by car manufacturers• Demonstrate the low energy consumption of the SAS• Implement a stateflow diagram for the truck to include CVT operation• Increase performance of the truck CVT to ‘beat’ conventional gear boxesResults: • New control strategy implemented for the clamping pressure control• Clamping pressure control of the SAS improved to be on par with commercial systems, this results in the low energy consumption of the system• Ratio control of the SAS improved to be well above specification (full shift in 1 sec.)• The truck is capable of normal driving in city and highway environments
To create light in an EUV lightsource a droplet of tin is hit by a powerful laser in a vacuum chamber. The tin droplet is created using a small nozzle with a piezo actuator. The unpredictable position of the droplet inside the vacuum was a major issue for this system. Also the reliability was an issue.Responsibilities: • Investigate and quantify instability of the droplets• Define possible root causes for this instability• Test solutions for the given root causes• Perform feasibility study to switch to a different method of creating droplets• Expand and enhance the found solution(s)• Improve the reliability of the whole setupResults: • A different method of creating droplets was identified as the most promising solution (streaming instead of droplet on demand)• Stability of the droplets increased to within the specified range• Time between interrupts of the system increased from hours to weeks• Downtime per interrupt was decreased from days to hours

Function owner of the Linear Axis (module of the NXT wafer scanner).Responsible for functional tests, qualification and structural improvements of the function (hardware parts as well as functional software). Furthermore I was part of a small team with to goal to improve the after-repair recovery times of this module as well as other modules such as the positioning module. This was mainly done by enhancing, removing and redesigning several calibration tests.Responsibilities: • Define additional tests for further analysis and troubleshooting• Gather test data and make a comparison to model or reference performance data• Detect bugs and define (software) specs for solutions and workarounds• Propose functional solutions, implement and test• Gather field data on module performance• Expand and enhance existing (qualification) testsResults:• A more robust hardware design of the Linear Axis was implemented and tested• All urgent customer issues resolved• Customer downtime for a Positioning module reduced from 11-30 days to 2-4 days on average
