The Kern Worforce Investment Board - Youth Council is a sub-board to the Workforce Investment Board that governs financial allocations to organizations like Career Services Center and Employer's Training Resource. Our mission was to prepare young people in our county to be more employable, productive citizens. I was appointed to this board by the Kern County Board of Supervisors.

Due to its location as well as the community it served, Norris received the least funds from state and federal government of any school district in the state of California. To achieve the goals of using technology with fidelity in our schools on a shoestring budget, I employed Free and Open Source Software and engaged the community in fund-raising and technology planning efforts.

Organization Profile: 5,000 Students || 450 Employees || 6 SchoolsMy Role: Trusted Administrator and Prolific TrainerTehachapi USD represented my first opportunity to lead a technology department as its director. I recognized immediately that the teachers, and even the community, did not trust the administrators. I also recognized that the teachers in the district needed technology training to use the technology they already had effectively with students. During my two years there, I personally provided over 140 training sessions for teachers. The extreme amount of time that I spent visibly on local school campuses caused me to become known as the most trusted administrator in the district, and allowed me to lead major projects through to completion without opposition from bargaining units.

However, the most cherished memories I have of working there involve developing special projects that caused me to fall deeply in love with education, and the vision of my role in it. I was a part of the small team of innovative people who created the Virtual Enterprise program in California and the KernLearn assessment portal. I served as the head of technology for both projects and worked closely for the first time with teachers and students to develop them. Both projects were absolutely cutting edge.
