White Center, Wa

Back to what I enjoy most, books and people. While my main duties are sorting and shelving books and media, I also enjoy the many learning and people-interaction opportunities that are available.

Position highlights:

•Organize and shelve books and media according to established company protocol.
•Move, distribute, and assist with processing of incoming and outgoing materials.
•Read and analyze spines of shelved items to determine misplaced items for re-shelving in correct order.
•Prepare rooms for meetings and assures that accessories needed for meetings are available.
•Manage time and workload to ensure efficient distribution of effort between shelving, unloading totes, processing contents, and any unplanned activity.
•Inspect materials for damages and processes accordingly.
•Assist with opening, maintaining and closing libraries, including equipment and grounds activities.
•Listen to the request of patrons and colleagues and provide answers or solutions.

One of our regular patrons posted this comment about me in March 2015:

"I want you to know about a particular employee that works at the White Center Library. I only know his first name - Tim. I have been watching this man go about his work for a little less than a year. His main activity seems to be shelving books according to the Dewey Decimal System. It seems to me to be monotonous work, but you wouldn't know that from watching Tim. This guy hustles! And he never stops! He hits the ground "running" at the beginning of his shift in the afternoon, and he keeps moving right up to closing time . . . . I've also noticed that he is courteous and helpful toward patrons, and he gets along well with his fellow library employees. Tim is a smart, sincere, and mature worker. My hope is that his employers have noticed his excellent work as I have."

Hands-on searching for documents and artifacts and creating visual presentations that inform and enthuse others was a fun experience. In addition to researching, copy editing, writing, and laying out the newsletter, I was the primary film-to-digital archivist.

Position highlights:

•Employed teamwork and communication skills to acquire and publish content in a format practical for viewing by printing and in digital form.
•Cleanup and revision of written content to improve readability.
•Proofread copy to detect and correct errors in spelling, punctuation, and syntax.
•Developed story or content ideas, considering broad audience appeal.
•Handled layout and design.

I copyedited and updated the company's internal glossary to present consistent style, unified voice, and accurate figures.

My biggest project was researching company history and either revising or creating text for new internal wiki entries to provide reference for staff writers and donor services.

Position highlights:

• Increased glossary usability by revising and creating entries.
• Ensured future product consistency by creating project's first style sheet.
• For Micro Finance, utilized online interface to edit and refine template-based status updates to donors.

2011 - 2013 ~2 yrs 5 mos

I supported a department staff of six, and additional office staff of 20. My main duties were customer service via phone and email and processing more than 1,000 new claims a year. General office duties included: phone answering, handling incoming and outgoing mail and shipping packages, photocopying, filing, creating and updating spreadsheets.

Setting up claims involved the following:

•Active listening to information presented by clients and claimant representatives to determine type of claim, urgency, and appropriate manner of interacting with callers.
•Critical thinking to assess given facts, and, based on understanding of the caller's personality and emotional condition, how to phrase questions to obtain important missing information.
•Speaking effectively, so that callers felt assured of our ability to handle their situation but also understand the claim handling process, as well as their contribution to resolution.
•Analyzing policy coverage and loss details to ensure superior quality control when entering new claims in database.

I was entrusted with the most complex customer service issues as a result of exceptional ability to promptly resolve concerns and satisfy clients.

Position highlights:

•Answered claims questions for Underwriting and Sales, clients, and claimant representatives.
•Improved dissemination of data by creating, updating, and redesigning spreadsheets for new claims, office contact lists, and annual reserves for clients.
•Initiated training sessions and designed visual tutorials to improve colleagues' working knowledge of Microsoft Office, email client, and claims-management system.
•Maintained office equipment and provided 1st-level tech support.
