Reporting to the Associate Dean for Public Services, manage all aspects of the McKeldin Library Access Services Department, which includes: Billing/Fines/Community Borrowers; Circulation/Reserves; Interlibrary Loan; Late Night Services and Building Security; and Stacks Maintenance. Provide administrative leadership and vision, organizational and resource management, strategic planning, and staff supervision and development. Plan, organize, and manage programs and services to meet the needs of library users in a fast-paced and changing information environment. Work closely with library staff to modify existing library programs and to develop, implement, and evaluate new programs. Represent the interests of the department and share in the leadership of the division and Libraries through participation in library leadership groups.

As the subject librarian for the departments of English, Linguistics, Women's Studies, and the program in Second Language Acquisition, worked with other Humanities & Social Sciences Librarians to provide reference, instruction, outreach and collection development services to these departments and to the larger UM community. Served on a number of functional teams within the Libraries, including the Diversity Team, Access Services Team, Staff Affairs Committee, Faculty Mentoring Committee, and Web Advisory Committee, and on campus, including the University Senate, Student Affairs Committee, Senate Nominations Committee, and more.

Adjunct instructor for two sessions of online course, SLS 60610: Management of Libraries and Information Centers, for the Kent State University School of Library and Information Science. 25 students each.

I was one of 2 librarians for this special library serving the graduate students and faculty of the College of Information Studies. Provided reference and research assistance; hired, trained, supervised and evaluated graduate and undergraduate student assistants; managed all circulation functions, including recalled items, overdue fines, hold requests, lost items and patron appeals, using Aleph Integrated Library System; worked with faculty members to offer course reading packets and reserves; initiated programs of instruction for CLIS graduate students and for undergraduate children’s literature students; designed and created library website, online research guides, library newsletter, and more.

Part-time position during Master of Library Science degree work. I managed office functions for this small but busy library software sales and consulting firm, including calendar management, orders, customer service and technical support. Under federal contract, I also cataloged a collection of human rights materials at the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) Resource Information Center (RIC) using Inmagic DB/TextWorks (database software), and provided reference assistance and database training to INS-RIC employees.

Led a team of three caseworkers to provide intensive daily support at school and in the home to at-risk students in two Washington County, MD middle schools. Planned and implemented after-school tutoring sessions, educational home visits, recreational activities, and formal and informal life-skills counseling to improve academic performance and behavior. Created a customized action plan for each student and assessed student progress quarterly.

Part-time position. Provided circulation and reserves service to students, faculty and staff. Shelved books and periodicals. Participated in long-term stacks maintenance projects as full-time employee during summer of 1996.

My first job! Not terribly exciting, but a good introduction to the work force. I was promoted to "Team Leader" and received some excellent management training, which has carried over into my focus on customer service in my current profession.
