I build technology companies, believe growth is the result of doing the right thing for customers and am thankful for the opportunity to have run businesses from pre-revenue to over $2B annually. Through leadership positions at the best performing enterprise during the dot.com era, the fastest growing technology organization in world history and the team that lead the largest series-A fundraise in silicon valley, I am fortunate to have worked with nearly every company in the Fortune 500, Global 2000 and the top 100 most disruptive startup organizations inventing the future. My specialty is startup and turnaround management with core competencies aligned with Enterprise Software, Cloud Computing and Cyber Security. As owner of market creation and expansion programs my art generated material-sized returns from sales, restructuring and investment activities in 35+ different countries.I have advised senior government leaders on national strategic programs, testified in front of the United States Congress on innovation, cyber warfare and have experience as a 30(b)(6) expert during bet-the-business events. As a trusted steward and business officer in companies funded by corporate venture desks, private equity and alumni pools I have learned to recognize favorable patterns and manage risk. Those skills have also helped more than one dozen seed and expansion stage organizations where I have deployed personal funds to accelerate growth. My corporate governance skills continue to mature in complex cross-border workouts and assembling activist positions in listed equities. I enjoy speaking with groups, conferences, classrooms and often advise executives, investors, entrepreneurs and their Boards. Lets connect to build. Technical Ventures Group, Founding Team MemberEmc Jul 2007 - May 2012Round Rock, Texas, UsThe Technical Ventures Group was an innovation archipelago created to identify, fund, build and acquire disruptive intellectual property with all of the institutional backing of EMC but without any classic organizational encumbrances. This nimble organization was a direct report to Board and made the first cloud computing investments on behalf of EMC in 2007. Later the team grew into the Cloud Infrastructure Division and EMC Ventures. I was recruited by Senior Vice President to build from scratch the startup sales and business development organization that focused on key verticals of service provider, defense, and intelligence markets. Later my role expanded to include relationships with financial service organizations including JPMC, CS, GS, Morgan Stanley and their trading partners. The team built Atmos, the first commercially viable software defined storage system, the Common Appliance Platform which pivoted all EMC products to x86 architecture, the Cloud Delivery Platform which enabled service providers like AT&T, Verizon, CenturyLink to enter the infrastructure as a service markets and other novel technologies that were commercialized as ViPR and ECS. We were modeled after and operated like Google X, Lab126, Apple Special Projects Group, XPARC, MITRE and conducted build, buy, invent, invest and partner programs for the M+A committee. As the Business Development Manager for Technical Ventures Group I was responsible for organization building & talent management, market penetration and expansion, sales channel management, strategic alliances, government relations, and thought leadership programs. Founding team member. Contributor to Congressional House Oversight and Government Reform Committee on Cloud Computing. Expert Witness to United States-China Economic and Security Review Commission. -
Director, Backup And Recovery | Commercial MarketsEmc Jan 2005 - Mar 2006Round Rock, Texas, UsIn 2005, I was hand-picked for a organizational restructuring assignment. The work stream was the precursor to and set the ground work for creating EMC's two most profitable operating lines - Backup and Recovery Platforms and Commercial Sales. By implementing a account segmentation and market sizing initiative focused on emerging markets (SMB and BRIC), I was able to grow revenue 23% year over year (double the industry average) and saved $18 million in direct labor expense by creating a new hire competency model. I sponsored the line card rationalization project to create a lower cost offering to expand addressable market size. This resulted in opening hundreds of new accounts while maintaining gross margin targets and helped acquire EMC's first Commercial customer accounts. Many of which remain in place today. Through my organization building & talent management, I generated $100+ million in revenue gains by creating a new sales productivity scorecard. I also decreased average selling time from 160 days to less than 140 days by launching regional subject matter expert programs to accelerate revenue velocity. During the project we established and implemented solution development methods and repeatable processes that enabled organizational scalability, I reduced the average deployment per unit expense by $1,800.00 to return free cash to the business. -
Strategy And Business Development ManagerEmc Oct 2000 - Jan 2005Round Rock, Texas, UsIn 2000, I was promoted to aid the turnaround EMC’s network storage division, increase sales, identify opportunities for product line refinement and strategic acquisitions for new product development, resolve complex account issues, and penetrate competitive accounts. With an eye toward competitive intelligence & industry research, I developed and executed a key account turnaround strategy that led to successful contract negotiations with seven multi-national organizations previously aligned with our largest competitor including: Exxon, Conoco, PDVSA, NEC, Aramco, PEMEX and Petrobras. My product development & line building skills were put to use when I expanded application of existing products through collaboration with engineering, product, and technical staff resulting in two new product offerings.Additionally, I participated in multiple buyouts, technology transfer agreements, and countless partnerships exercises. -
