Managed the day-to-day business operations for two research cores at Brigham & Women's Hospital, with duties ranging from sales and accounting to HR, marketing and grant administration.
I handled negotiations, budget planning, and execution of clinical trial contracts for ImagingDMD at the University of Florida. ImagingDMD's purpose is to aid in the research, treatment, and eventual cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a genetic muscle condition seen in boys that causes muscle weakness that eventually results in the inability to walk or perform other daily tasks. Clinical and pharmaceutical research interests are rapidly growing, which focused my efforts into expanding the organization's research network across the US, Canada, and Europe in an attempt to expedite the search for a cure.

UF’s Southeast Center for Integrated Metabolomics (SECIM) is one of the nation’s six NIH-funded non-profit metabolomics research and service centers. As SECIM’s Project Manager, I oversaw the 5-year $12MM budget, university and federal compliance, marketing, sales and other administrative responsibilities pertaining to the center. As the first full-time employee of the research start-up, I was directly involved in designing and implementing each of the five cores’ (departments’) service pipelines. I organized and led several cross-functional weekly meetings between administrative and scientific cores. As the first line of communication with clients, I handled over 200 sales inquiries and managed the intake of over $500k in sales revenue in the center’s first three years of operation. Additionally, I supervised and managed the center’s Accounting Coordinator, ensuring proper compliance, invoicing, and financial reporting functions.A large portion of my responsibilities also involved the center’s marketing activities including: authoring and managing the center’s website content through WordPress; coordinating all aspects of 5 conferences (ranging in attendance size from 40-160), 1 NIH site visit, an open house, and dozens of guest faculty seminars; designing brochures, presentations, and announcements; advertising job openings through various media outlets; as well as e-mail campaigns and surveys through Mailchimp, Qualtrics, and university listservs. I was also directly responsible for SECIM’s NIH-mandated function of annually promoting and funding $150-250k in “Pilot & Feasibility” projects, for which SECIM received more applications and funded more projects than any other national center during the program’s 3-year history. Finally, managing a center with multiple functions, services, revenue sources, university departments, and partner institutions required me to be extremely organized, responsive, flexible and attentive to detail.

During my four-plus seasons in Detroit, I worked in the Major League club’s Baseball Video Operations Department. My daily responsibilities included advance scouting of our opponents, statistical research, video editing, clubhouse technical support, and charting games. We used BATS, TVTI, BATS Web, MLB Clips, DataPro, and Pro Mirror for our video editing, viewing and advance scouting needs. During each home game, I edited live footage from the clubhouse for the team’s in-game use, and assisted in any technical video aspects for coaching and player personnel. Despite the title of “Video Baseball Operations Assistant,” my primary role for the Tigers was to write advance scouting reports prior to every series the team played. I watched hours of video, researched statistics, and analyzed data trends in an effort to create a competitive advantage for the coaching staff and players. While we fell just shy of our ultimate goal, my proudest career moment came in 2012 when I, along with my colleagues, helped prepare the team for every matchup during the regular and postseason, resulting in an American League Championship title and a trip to the World Series.Additional duties and responsibilities included: constructing the department’s annual budget; purchasing necessary equipment and tracking department expenses; interviewing, hiring, and overseeing all Video Operations interns and their productivity; working cooperatively with the front office to ensure all necessary video and statistics were available for trade talks, free agency and the draft; attending Spring Training each season for video-related and clubhouse support; and any/all other spontaneous and uncommon requests from coaching, scouting and player personnel.

As an intern, I aided the Assistant Director of Amateur Scouting in the daily operations of the department. The main objective of the Amateur Scouting Department is to identify and target talented high school, junior college, and college-level baseball players in the annual Rule 4 Draft. In preparation for the draft, my baseball-related tasks included maintaining an exhaustive database of amateur statistics, gathering players’ medical reports and biographical information, and assembling scouts’ evaluative reports into sortable preference lists. The Tigers’ 2008 Amateur Draft selections saw six players make it to the big leagues, including one All Star (Alex Avila, Rd. 5). Additionally, I reviewed scouts’ monthly expense reports, organized travel schedules, balanced quarterly departmental budgets, and communicated regularly with coaches, scouts, players, and administrators.Other notable projects included the organization and local management of the 2008 East Coast Pro Showcase, videotaping and editing amateur baseball games, and compiling statistical and objective information for personnel evaluations. Extensive use of Excel, ScoutAdvisor, and the EBIS (Electronic Baseball Information System) online database helped improve my organizational and research acumen.
Phoenix, Arizona Area
Throughout college, I aspired to work in baseball operations for a Major League Baseball team. So, after graduating from the University of Miami and working for a summer back home in Rhode Island, a friend of mine and I decided to drive across the country to scout minor league baseball players in the 2007 Arizona Fall League. Armed with a pen, notepad and wristwatch, we spent six weeks scouting teams around the metro-Phoenix area. We sat behind major league scouts, and “stole” their radar-gun readings to jot down pitchers’ velocities. Eventually, since there were less than 100 people at any given game, the scouts took note of our attendance and embraced us into their inner circle. We used our notes from batting practice and games to create scouting reports for each player in the league, and compiled those reports into an all-encompassing 2007 Arizona Fall League scouting portfolio. The scouting portfolio and network of connections I made in Arizona led to interviews at the 2007 General Managers’ Winter Meetings in Nashville, Tennessee, which ultimately landed me my first job in Major League Baseball as the 2008 Amateur Scouting Intern for the Detroit Tigers.
