I have covered every important event in the Balkans from just before the outbreak of the wars to the present. Other big stories covered include the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Before that Ukraine in 2014/15, the fall of the Taliban in 2001, the fall of Saddam in 2003. Reporting in 2018 from Agadez in Niger on the edge of the Sahara on the migrant trail and in summer 2021 on famine in Madagascar.

Since 1998 I have been a contributor to the NYRB writing to date, almost 50 mostly reportage pieces for them. Most recently I have covered the Russian invasion of Ukraine. I wrote about the Balkan conflicts for them and covered the fall of the Taliban in 2001 and the fall of Saddam in 2003 for them. Other pieces have been from South Sudan, Darfur, Uganda, Armenia and Nagorno-Karabagh. After the Maidan revolution in Ukraine in 2015 I wrote a series of pieces on the war in the east. In 2018 I went to Niger and the edge of the Sahara for them.

Helping steer BIRN as the only pan-Balkan news network and leading NGO. In 2017-18 I have helped oversee the transition from the founding CEO to a new head. Part of the job involves representing BIRN outside of the region and lobbying for it where necessary.

Pristina

Helping steer IKS, one of the best think-tanks in Kosovo. Member of the board from 2010, chairman from February 2020.

Over the years I have consulted for various companies who have asked me for help in one way or another. These have included Telenor (Norway), Grampet (Romania) and Alaco (UK). In 2018 I worked on a major project for the EBRD in London.

I covered the invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and the conflict in 2014-15. I covered all the wars and conflicts in the Balkans. Others wars and conflicts covered include Afghanistan, Iraq, South Sudan, Darfur and Uganda (LRA). In 2022 I was shortlisted for the Bayeux-Calvedos-Normandy war correspondents prize.

Istanbul, Turkey

Worked with Alida Vracic on a project for UNFPA Eastern Europe and Central Asia on a report on possible opportunities arising from Covid 19 especially with regard to rural revitalisation focusing on Serbia and Bulgaria. We followed this up at UNFPA's demography conference in Sofia in December 2021 where we presented a panel on the issue.

Worked with Alida Vracic on a project for UNDP Serbia to provide inputs for them on the issue of depopulation.

Vienna

Fellow at IWM / The Institute of Human Sciences in Vienna. I began work on a project about shrinking populations in the Balkans and CEE. I complied up to date data and work is being published by Reporting Democracy / Balkan Insight. It will also be published in the Economist.

London, United Kingdom

Director at Reportage Press. It specialised in books on foreign affairs, novels set in foreign countries; non-fiction, essays, travel books, old travel memoirs, or just books written from a stranger’s point of view.

While a fellow at the South East Europe section of LSE's European Institute I developed the concept of the Yugosphere which has been widely adopted since then.

Consultant about Kosovo at the (then) International Policy Institute at King's College London. We put together a major study on international peacekeeping. It was all wasted. The next year I witnessed US troops roll into Baghdad and make every possible mistake that we had identified from past interventions.

Covered the aftermath of communism in Romania and Bulgaria. Then covered the conflict in Slovenia and then the wars in Croatia and Bosnia-Hercegovina.
