OPTIMISED (Operational Planning Tool Interfacing Manufacturing Integrated Simulations with Empirical Data) was a 3-year, 10-party consortium project funded by the EU within the Horizon 2020 “Factories of the Future” framework, in the topic area of ICT-enabled modelling, simulation, analytics and forecasting technologies. The consortium members were Laing O’Rourke plc, UK (Lead Party), Keonys SAS, France, Advanced Data Processing GmbH, Germany, The University of Nottingham, UK, Alstom Transport S.A., France, SimPlan AG, Germany, Ideko S. COOP, Spain, Goimek S. COOP, Spain, Smarter Grid Solutions Ltd, UK and Dassault Systemes SE, France.Limberger Associates were contracted to carry out end-to-end Project Management and Project Support of the project.OPTIMISED developed digital twins and decision support systems using IIOT solutions to create optimised and reactive planning systems across three industrial demonstrators. Excellent final project review with the EU review panel.

Brought in to resolve problems arising from a lack of project management and poor building standards on a high value residential property, with ambitions from the clients for high thermal efficiency and airtightness.Provided project management, requirements management, financial control, prime point of contact with trades and other services, as well as supporting legal interactions between client and trades.

Responsible for the delivery of the Global Engineering work-stream, which was part of the overall Energy business separation. The Engineering work-stream included the delivery to Siemens of data, tools and engineering services for day 1 operation as well as ensuring that processes were in place to support the on-going long-term agreement.

Operations (P&L of £15M budget) Resource and Programme Management for corporate function providing engineering IT systems, analysis tools, methods and consultancy to the Engineering Function (13,500 heads) across all sectors. Department of 160 engineers, 15 students & 70 outsourced staff across UK, Germany, USA and India.Global portfolio of 21 projects, 400+ team members and total value of approx. £20M pa. Project values from £22M - £100k, involving significant complexity and novelty in the fields of physics, applied science and computing.Key achievements:Implementation and development of Project & Programme Management function, driving improved KPI performance and professionalism of project and risk management.Achieved reduction in overheads, improved resource management and improved recruitment performance.Implemented structured risk management and utilisation of enterprise risk management tool.Increased the numbers of student internships, resulting in benefits for the department.

Operational and Strategic Quality & Improvements for global Supply Chain Unit Engineering Function of over 200 engineers: Department responsible for Fan Systems for all Civil and Military Aero Gas Turbines. Development of automated engineering systems. Manufacturing support and sentencing of concessions.Key achievements:Improved Quality and Improvements strategy and the management of improvements projects.Recognised by the Group Engineering Director as most successful implementation of engineering key systems.Developed a proposal for a new organisational model for the Central Engineering IT Tools & Methods function with the addition of a Programme and Project Management function.Initiated a requirement for engineering analysis data storage to cover all engineering requirements, which was then developed as a corporate model for implementation by the IT function.Improved concession turn-round time, reducing WIP within the factories.

Instruction and approval of the pass-off test for every new production and overhauled engine going through the Derby test beds, worth over £2B pa to the Civil Aerospace sector. 25 direct reports on mix of shifts and days.Key achievements:Implemented web-based Statistical Process Control (SPC) into the engine pass-off process, enabling access by all functions requiring the information. This enabled £10M NPV saving through being able to better understand the sources of performance issues and subsequently demonstrate improvements through statistical analysis.Improved the “working together” culture between Engineering and Operations, improving the resolution of engine and test bed issues; implemented a rational approach to engine functional acceptance limits to improve test throughput; implemented structured problem investigation into the department; established an improvements team to develop tactical and strategic solutions to assembly, rigging and test processes whilst also leading the operational shift teams; initiated the placement of graduate trainees into the department.

Engine R&D and in-service support for large installed fleet on Airbus A320 series aircraft. Developed and implemented operability and performance strategies to support key modification programmes, e.g. compressor blade redesigns, cost reduction packages, control system software and hardware changes; developed a reputation for the best graduate trainee attachments in the Performance Function; developed excellent working relationships with the International Aero Engines party companies, particularly Pratt & Whitney; developed business case for the purchase of P&W engine model, including control system, instead of developing an RR model; created and delivered engine performance training packages for graduate trainees; developed team capability including re-building after two redundancy programmes post 9/11

Lead Performance Engineer for low NOx combustor application on RB211-535E4 (for Boeing 757 and Tu204); responsible for functional test specification, support and analysis, including detailed assessment of the drivers of combustor rumble; setting transient performance control system requirements and analysing compressor stability issues

Development of performance and emissions characteristics of 4-cylinder, V6 and V8 engines for cars and SUVs; pioneered the application of simulation in place of iterative bench testing.

Development of HGV trailer suspensions: correlation of test data to service life requirements; cyclic and critical location fatigue and stress analysis; invention of patented design modification to leaf-spring suspension system.
