Supervised a staff of six professionals and managed a budget of $1.3 million while holding direct responsibility for marketing, membership recruitment and government relations, as well as business administration and meeting planning; continuing to manage Pipeline PR + Marketing until NOFMA entered merger discussions with the National Wood Flooring Association. Notable successes included an effort in conjunction with The Hardwood Federation to convince Congress to request a Section 322 investigation into competitive conditions affecting international trade in hardwood flooring and plywood (final report was released August 2008). Petitioned the International Trade Commission to rewrite harmonized tariff system (HTS) codes to more accurately track imported hardwood flooring. Initiated a request for the U.S. Customs Service to investigate alleged misclassification of imported hardwood flooring, resulting in a $35 million increase in tariffs (year one) that would otherwise have gone uncollected. These efforts significantly enhanced the U.S. industry's competitive position at a time when low-cost imports combined with weak market conditions were threatening the industry's survival. Also in conjunction with The Hardwood Federation convinced the U.S Green Building Council to form a task force for the purpose of reconsidering its position on wood products as green building materials. The white paper produced by this task force recommended USGBC award a LEED point for the use of wood and an additional LEED point for use of FSC-certified wood. This recommendation lays the groundwork for greatly enhancing the value of wood products in the LEED rating system.
