The topic of my dissertation challenge is "Narrative Elements in Leadership: Reflections about stories on actions of leaders".Narrative intelligence is the ability to craft, tell, understand, and respond to stories. My focus in on the human narrative intelligence to create a framework for leadership. This would have immediate applications in leader and leadership development. As a leader you have a tool to be aware how you are (often unknowingly) effected by the narrative space around, and how this could be beneficially used in managerial work. In a bigger picture this connects to Systems Intelligence, which is about acting as part of the system, trying to understand and look for constructive ways from within the system involving interaction, dynamics and feedback.Looking boldly at the horizon, it is possible to see further applications for narratives in artificial intelligence, in Human-AI interactions, and in digital marketing as well. Stories could be used in machine learning to enculturate AI to desired values and to ethical actions of robots. Regarding human-computer interaction, AI might be able to explain its reasoning via stories or a narrative framework, in order to tackle the so called “black box” problem. In practice it means that AI could tell how, or why it ended up to a certain action or recommendation. If AI is used to assisting management, or is a member of management team, this would bring transparency to its decision making. Conversely, if AI is used as an intelligent agent, it could question the human reasoning, and suggest additional points of view.
