Tim Oldershaw.“I started my working life with electrical contractors J Brand Ltd. as an apprentice electrician in 1977. A course at Carshalton College resulted in me being sub contracted to IBM to convert American standard wiring schemes for use in City Dealing offices.Data networking became a necessity during the 1980’s. Holding the position of Foreman in J Brand Ltd.’s fledgling Data Division – setup to take advantage of this burgeoning market – I worked on network designs for ICL, RTC and the Nixdorf Company amongst others.Nixdorf later benefitted from the 1st Cat3 installation, which I designed and was implemented by the team at J Brand Ltd. This ‘hands-on’ approach and expanding experience in the networking arena led me to be invited to become the Data and Telecom Specialist Representative for the ECA Controls Committee and the ‘Installation Expert’ for the BSI-TCT7 in 1996.1997 saw membership of IST31/-/1 as the ‘invited expert on installation of Structured cabling and also membership of Cenelec TC215 (European Committee) WG2 holding the position of UK Principal Expert.
