As leader of the Industrial Hygiene Division of Environmental Health and Safety Mr. Barton is responsible for health and safety programs related to chemical and physical agent exposures, hazardous chemical waste, indoor air quality, and The Joint Commission's Environment of Care standards related to hazardous material and wastes. The scope of his responsibilities includes more than 150 research laboratories, clinical care areas, an Animal Resources Center, and GMP facility. His team is responsible for supporting the researchers and health care practitioners at St. Jude through the certification and maintenance of engineering controls, handling of chemical waste, emergency response, and promoting safety practices.

Mr. Barton managed environmental and occupational health and safety programs for the NYU School of Medicine, NYU Hospital Center and more than 500 associated research laboratories. Construction safety in the clinical care environment was a major component of his work at NYULMC. During his tenure at this facility preparations for the construction of a new high-rise hospital facility were underway, the demolition of two building's were in progress, and an 18 story elevator addition was attached to the existing hospital. Mr. Barton's accomplishments included the development of a medical center-wide sustainability plan the culminated in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between NYULMC and the US EPA.

During his time at AKRF Mr. Barton expanded his environmental experience to include Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments and remediation oversight on major brownfield projects around the New York metropolitan area. The majority of his time was spent managing environmental technicians providing asbestos and lead services (surveys, project monitoring, remediation oversight) for New York City Transit and other public and private clients. Close work with both clients and construction companies was an essential component of this experience. It paved the way for the work he would later do at NYULMC where construction would be an ongoing theme at this integrated medical center.

As a high school science teacher Mr. Barton taught Chemistry, Biology, and Forensic Science. An understanding of fundamental educational principles, such as applied behavioral analysis, continue to be important tools as a health and safety professional. Concepts like lesson and unit plan development, the ability to differentiate instruction, scaffolding information, and the application of Bloom's taxonomy are incorporated into both staff development efforts and the many EHS training programs Mr. Barton has created. His classroom experience also helped to promote verbal communication and public speaking skills.

Mr. Barton learned the value that a good environmental consultant can provide to a building owner or property manager while working for Hillmann Consulting. Following the World Trade Center disaster he spent months overseeing cleanup operations for clients impacted by this event. The majority of his tenure with Hillmann was spent providing asbestos consultation services as a licensed New York City Asbestos Investigator and Project Monitor. He obtained NIOSH 582 Equivalency certification to become qualified to read PCM samples. He also began to develop project management experience overseeing other environmental technicians that worked throughout the states of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania.

As a student teacher in this prestigious New York City public school Mr. Barton completed his Masters thesis on differentiated instruction in the classroom. He gained experience working with a unique and talented group of students in an unfamiliar setting. Following his student teaching experience in Chemistry he was hired as a Biology teacher to replace a colleague that was out of the classroom on maternity leave.

After a college internship Mr. Barton was hired as a full-time employee to work in this environmental lab. His job experience included the extraction and analysis of semi-volatile organic contamination from soil and water. This lab experience helped to familiarize him with the interpretation of lab results, develop an understanding of the role that Quality Control plays in analysis, and provided firsthand experience working in a lab. This experience continues to pay dividends as an industrial hygienist working in research environment.
