Foreign Area Officers (FAOs) are commissioned officers deliberately accessed, trained, educated, and developed to meet worldwide Army requirements for officers possessing a unique combination of strategic focus, regional expertise, foreign language proficiency, and professional military skills and experience. Army Foreign Area Officers are regionally-focused experts in political-military operations with advanced language skills, cultural understanding, and the ability to advise senior military and civilian strategic decision-makers in an era of persistent conflict. FAOs can best be described as the Army's "Soldier-Statesmen” and are called to:Advise senior leaders on political-military operations with other nations.Provide cultural expertise -regional and interagency - to deployed commanders throughout military operations.Build and maintain long term relationships with foreign leaders.Coordinate and implement security cooperation programs to build partner nation capacity.Collect and report on foreign nation DIME activities.As the Army transforms, the importance of the FAO program is growing. FAOs are a critical component in establishing and maintaining contact with foreign militaries and enhancing the effectiveness of our expeditionary Army. FAOs are often the sole Army and/or Department of Defense representatives in foreign countries, executing national security policies and objectives or serving as key advisors to senior level commanders and Chiefs of Mission. FAOs continue to be national assets as Soldiers, first and foremost, who are also excellent linguists, area experts, and political-military specialists.

MA program in International Studies combining an in-depth study of the Comparative Politics Field along with a range of skills courses and a concentration in intelligence, national security and the Middle East. While in the program I have undertaken a broad and intensive course of study, focusing on issues including the influence of foreign actors on U.S. foreign policy, democratization and development in the Middle East and U.S. defense policy and practice. Major research efforts sought to explain Kuwait’s laggard economic modernization as compared to its near peer GCC neighbors. By comparing six broad variable of economic dynamism along with internal regime dynamics, I argued that Kuwait’s obstructionist parliamentary process inhibits regime autonomy and contributes an explanation of Kuwait’s performance. Additionally, I have consulted with Dr. Jonathan Moyer, director of the Pardee Center for International Futures, providing feedback on the center’s ongoing Minerva Initiative collaboration with the Department of Defense. This project is focused on the quantification of diplomatic relationships globally.
