About Timothy Krantz

Dr. Krantz combines 45 years of professional experience across a broad range of environmental planning and resource management programs. He is the principal consultant of Timothy Krantz Environmental Consulting, specializing in environmental impact assessment and navigating state and federal permit requirements and CEQA and NEPA policy guidelines. He served as a Planning Commissioner for San Bernardino County from 1983-1988, at the time one of the youngest Commissioners in the largest County district in the nation. He returned to graduate school at Stanford University for his Masters degree in Latin American Studies (1990-1991) and the University of California at Berkeley for his Ph.D. in Geography (1991-1994), working on the phyto (plant) geography of the San Bernardino Mountains, which remains one of his areas of expertise. Upon graduation from Berkeley, he worked as the Senior Environmental Scientist for Levine-Fricke--an environmental engineering company based in Emeryville, California, where he oversaw environmental remediation and restoration projects dealing with oil, gas and chemical releases in California and Hawaii. Some of his signature projects included the Port of Oakland's Arrowhead Marsh saltmarsh restoration proiect, Pier 98 remediation project in South San Francisco, and environmental planning for the Goleta Slough mitigation and restoration project for the Santa Barbara Municipal Airport expansion project. He returned to his home town of Redlands, California, in 1997, where he was a Professor of Environmental Science for 25 years. During that time he served as the Salton Sea Database Program Manager from 1998-2007, overseeing a $4.3M GIS research program coordinating the work of the Salton Sea Science Subcommittee under the auspices of the Department of Interior, resulting in publication of the Salton Sea Atlas, of which he was the Senior Editor. During his tenure at the University, Dr. Krantz was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to Austria in 2009-2010, based at the Technical University of Vienna, where he brokered an M.O.U. between the governments of Austria and California, focussing on renewable energy technology transfer between the E.U. and the U.S. He retired from the University in May 2022 and started the next week in his new job as Conservation Director for The Wildlands Conservancy--the largest private, non-profit land trust in California, overseeing nearly 500 square miles in 25 preserves distributed throughout California and in Oregon and Utah.

The Wildlands Conservancy is the largest private, non-profit land conservation organization in California, overseeing 25 preserves statewide and in Oregon and Utah, altogether including more than 300,000 acres (470 sq.mi.) ranging from San Diego to Humboldt Counties, from the Jenner Headlands on the central coast to the Walker River preserves on the eastern Sierras and the Whitewater River in the Colorado Desert. As Conservation Director, I oversee landscape-scale restoration and re-wilding projects, and provide CEQA and NEPA policy and regulatory permitting support. In the past year I have helped secure several million dollars of State and Federal grants for acquisitions and watershed restoration projects. Exemplary among these are the Bluff Lake Reserve watershed restoration and re-wilding grants totalling $500,000, with which we are restoring the meadow and lake hydrology by removing berms, restoring the natural drainage of the creek to the lake, installing a solar-powered backup well to maintain lake levels during low-flow drought years, and replacing a graded dirt road across the meadow with a boardwalk for hikers to walk easily across the meadow adjacent to the lake without trampling on endangered plants and frogs. Working with the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance and state and federal resource agencies, we reintroduced 74 critically endangered southern mountain yellow-legged frogs into the lake in June after a 72-year absence from the area since they were last recorded there; and we will receive the extremely endangered unarmored three-spine stickleback fish in the lake later this month (September), 2023.

He then applied that expertise with the formulation of an integrated renewable energy plan for the Salton Sea, including geothermal lithium extraction--one of the first proponents of this industry in the Basin as early as 2010-2012. He has substantial experience working with the mining industry, particularly with precious metals, limestone, and aggregates, leading to an appointment on the State Mining and Geology Board's mine reclamation review committee in 1996-1997.
