What a Wonderful WorldI recently arrived back in the U.S. after an incredible year spent with teachers, students and rowers in Norway. Serving as a Roving Scholar offered a fascinating opportunity to share innovative workshops, experience a society that elevates human rights, ply the fjords with oars, venture without a car to every corner of a nation with more miles of coastline than the U.S. and fulfill the Fulbright goal of "turning nations into people." The thing I remember most about Norway was people saying "thank you" - takk for turen, takk for maten, takk for i dag, takk for sist. It says something special about a society when people appreciate each other for their role in contributing to the things we enjoy.Two Great Things that Go Great TogetherAs an International Baccalaureate and Council of International Schools consultant, content designer, and workshop leader, a US Institute of Peace “Peace Teacher,” and curious Economist, I help learners to become “Renaissance People” who seek to build a more human world. Remember the Reese's Peanut Butter Cup ad, where chocolate collides with peanut butter and results in a masterpiece? That's what I do. Whether it's combining economics with narrative writing, puppetry with human sciences, business studies with design thinking, technology with ethics or history through artistic expression. I introduce learners to new ways to help create the magic and build thoughtful societies. When all you have is a Hammer... Teach it New Tricks!In 2022, the amazing puppeteers at Sandglass Theater in Vermont taught me new ways that my learners can use puppetry to explore everything from the roots of modern conflicts to human behaviors in Nazi Germany. Hands-on engagement, inquiry, and critical thinking drive the learning as I work to shape energizing environments that build cultures of trust, possibility, respect, and inclusiveness and help us all to imagine what is possible. The arts hold a special role in learning for extending pedagogical possibilities far beyond traditional subject silos. What better way to appreciate Bengali culture than to create lost-wax method bronze statues, learn about the Renaissance than by by using DaVinci's methods to paint an authentic fresco, or understanding the intricacies of the natural world than through the indigneous American grammar of animacy? The magic finds us when we combine two great ideas that fit perfectly together!
