Over the last decade, I've installed the Epic electronic health record system at 21 hospitals. Starting as an analyst, I learned the technical skills for building, testing, and deploying enterprise systems. I doubled my base salary by taking that role. But the work was driving me to burnout. So, as I began to consider what to do instead, I remembered my experiences working on these Epic projects. Along the way, I had picked up plenty of the 'soft' skills for…→ collaborating within a diverse team,→ managing stakeholders' needs/desires, and → listening empathetically to better understand clinicians' challenges. I had built a track record of success. With my experiences, I moved from the analyst role into a leadership position within my Epic team. In 2017, I took an overarching role as the program manager for two health systems’ Epic implementations. That's when I 𝙛𝙚𝙡𝙡 𝙞𝙣 𝙡𝙤𝙫𝙚 with Project Management. (Though I had no formal experience or training.)Working on that double-install project was exhilarating. And the results were pretty phenomenal. The projects were successful in every measurable way. I continued to manage progressively more substantial projects, culminating in a $37M effort to replace an aging hospital’s information systems (*all* of them) while simultaneously moving to a newly built facility (something few had ever attempted).It concluded in a go-live effort, during which we shut down the command center a week early because there were so few support issues. (That project was a bear, but I learned so much along the way.)Since then, I've redesigned processes, built teams, and become a leader of my Project Management Office. Now I'm helping others achieve similar goals.
