I hold a PhD in English and a Certificate in Teaching Technical Writing from the University of North Texas. In addition to serving as an Associate Professor of Instruction, I currently serve as both the Coordinator of Internships and Coordinator of Technical Writing and Professional Design in the Department of English at UTA. The focus in all my course work is to teach effective user experience (UX) by providing an exceptional UX to my students. I accomplish this through creatively leveraging instructional design (ID) tools and practices. Through active and engaging digital and face-to-face experiences, I enact the very principles I seek to teach. In addition to my teaching, I have also had the privilege of leading teams both in the corporate setting (Starbucks Coffee Company and Bank of America) and an educational setting (the First-Year Writing program at UNT and the Technical Writing and Professional Design/ Internship programs at UTA). Grounding my leadership philosophy within the concept of mentorship, I have always led by empowering my team to reach their professional goals. True leadership, in my practice, focuses on making spaces for opportunity, moments where every team member can put their best on display and move their career forward. My current projects include completing a certificate in online learning and instructional design from the Online Learning Consortium, redesigning two fully online courses at UTA, and uniting four online courses to form a cohesive course sequence as part of a new technical communication certificate. Building from my experience piloting Microsoft Teams for Higher Education in 2018, I am leveraging my LMS knowledge (e.g., Canvas, Learn-Dash, Kajabi) and my design skills (e.g., InDesign, Photoshop, Camtasia, Screencast-O-Matic) to build effective and memorable learning experiences. While winning numerous teaching and compliance awards have been wonderful, my highest achievements come in the form of students and former teams members who are out in the world putting their skills to use. Nothing fills me with more joy than seeing people be successful.
