I wasn't always set on a career in software, but my first computer science course in college set me on that path and I haven't looked back. Computer science and software engineering quickly became passions of mine. Even though I started my learning a little late, I have made up for lost time by taking all of the classes I can fit and fully applying myself to classwork and internships. It's been a long but fast-paced learning journey, and I'm excited to take the next step and carry everything I've achieved into the professional world!My earlier years of college were largely spent mastering the fundamentals of object-oriented programming through Python and C++. As a result, these are the two languages I am most comfortable in, but I am currently in a Programming Languages class through which I will become familiar with Go, Scheme, R, and Javascript over the course of the semester. Finally, I will end my time in computer science at St. Olaf with several larger projects -- such as a story-writing AI and my to-be-determined senior capstone -- through which I will get a good taste of some larger scale coding. Along with computer science, I bring an overall comfort with quantitative thinking from my background in mathematics, statistics, and data science.For the last two summers I had an internship with a startup called EnviroAI. The company primarily focuses on environmental data, and it aspires to global environmental protection through technology. As an intern, I worked to automate the process of creating readable PDF summary documents from the data in their PostgreSQL database using open source Python libraries. However, each summer I also gave a presentation on potential new ideas for the company with the other interns. The programming work gave me valuable experience in overcoming unexpected obstacles and problem solving in general, and also in writing well-organized and thoroughly-commented code that can easily be followed by others. The experience as a whole taught me a lot about communication -- especially interdisciplinary -- since I had no environmental background and had to understand the data I was working with.Before these internships, my previous work experience was almost exclusively in tennis coaching. While tennis coaching obviously does not directly connect to computer science, it gave me experience connecting with and communicating ideas to people of all ages. This I can bring with me to the computer science world, where I can be an effective and supportive (and hopefully enjoyable!) team member and coworker.
