    Seattle, Wa, Us
Department of OphthalmologyPrincipal Investigator: Russell N. Van Gelder, MD, PhDIntrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs), a third photoreceptor in the mammalian retina, subserve non-visual photoreception functions such as circadian entrainment and the pupillary light response. Project 1: Determined that changes in ipRGC light responses during development accompanied by a dramatic decrease in levels of the photopigment melanopsin in the different ipRGC subtypes. Project 2: Screened set of small molecule melanopsin agonist candidates on ipRGC activity in ex vivo retinal preps using multi-electrode array. Candidate drugs identified by high throughput screening by Roche Pharmaceuticals,
  • University Of Washington
    Graduate Student
University Of Washington Oct 2007 - Dec 2013
    Seattle, Wa, Us
Graduate Program in Neuroscience (previously Neurobiology and Behavior) Advisor: Russell N. Van Gelder, MD, PhDDissertation: Physiology and Development of Inner Retinal Photoreception.Melanopsin is the GPCR photopigment of intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs), a third photoreceptor type in the mammalian retina. Project 1: Determined in vivo chromophore preference for melanopsin, supporting a bistable mechanism of chromophore recycling for melanopsin. Project 2: Characterized changes in early post-natal development of ipRGC light responses and firing characteristics. Project 3: Demonstrated that G-protein regulating kinase 2 (GRK-2) only minimally regulates melanopsin despite previous evidence implicating it in melanopsin phosphorylation and signal termination.

University Of Washington Oct 1994 - Aug 2007
    Seattle, Wa, Us
Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral SciencePrincipal Investigator and Supervisor: John F. Neumaier, MD, PhD.Role of serotonin receptors in animal models of stress, depression, schizophrenia and drug addiction. Lead technician and laboratory manager. Lab management included compliance with university, state and federal regulations concerning hazardous materials, radioactive materials and controlled substances (schedule I drugs). Involved in, or responsible for hiring and supervising laboratory personnel. A sample of major projects I led include: Project 1: Demonstrated altered serotonin receptor 5-HT1B activity in striatum following long-term treatment with the street drug methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA). First author paper published.Project 2: Established production of a Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) based virally mediated gene transfer system, including designing and building viral constructs and the production of high titer virus for injection into rat brain. Project 3: Developed serotonin promoter specific HSV construct and virus as lab’s first promoter specific virus.
