As a committee member of GHD’s South Queensland Young Professionals group, we strive to provide a platform for development of our young professionals. As the Head of Community, I lead initiates to internally strengthen relationships and build on our internal community. Externally, I helped provide my colleagues with opportunities to give back by running charities events such as Movember, and by donating our skills, money, time and effort to the Leukaemia Foundation. Through various workshops and working bees, the GHD YPs transformed an outdoor area for the Leukaemia Foundation from an unused parking space to a beautiful outdoor oasis including murals, sitting areas, a BBQ and several planting structures.

As a graduate civil engineer, I have had a well rounded experience working in different fields of civil engineering. From tunnel projects, to construction verification and design of dam upgrades, to assistant project management of a very large multi disciplinary road project, I have picked up the skills required to deliver high quality projects.

Tutoring in the area of first to third year civil engineering subjects. I ran practical lab classes as well as classroom style tutorials, and below are the subjects that I tutored:ENGG1400 Engineering Mechanics - statics practical (first year)CIVL3140 Catchment Hydraulics - open channel flow practicals (third year)CIVL2360 Reinforced Concrete Structures - batching, casting and testing practicals; classroom tutorials (second year)

Privately tutor students in high school level maths A, B and C, physics, chemistry, and tutor a primary school student in music (trombone). Inherent in the role is the ability to communicate ideas and concepts to the students as well as identifying areas where the students struggle. Developing strategies to overcome these is very important.

Working in the marine team, I would independently run an entire coastal engineering project with help from a principle coastal engineer. Reports were then written and published. I would also help design and analyse marine jetty structures and parts of ferry terminals in computer programs such as Space Gass and Strand7, as well as first principle design calculations.

My tasks involved checking engineering drawings and providing markups, design calculations and interpretation of drawings to develop a bill of quantities document. After one month at Arup, I travelled to Kenya for volunteering.
