I worked with people in the end-stages of their life, and their families. I was able to extend strong spiritual and emotional care, presence and empathy during a crucial time of discovery and mediation of personal and family concerns before death. I often continued connections after death through conducting funerals, offering of bereavement services and meeting family members post-death in comforting surroundings. I was able to greatly expand my repertoire of care through out-of-the-box thinking and collaboration during this on-going COVID-19 pandemic. My continuing personal experience with COVID has enlarged my heart for those dealing with, and losing family members through this virus. I also provided empathetic support for nursing home staffs and my hospice team both during and after work hours.

I was an Illinois certified Firefighter III with additional certifications in Hazardous Materials Operations, Technical Rescue Operations, Fire Service Vehicle Operations, and Ice Rescue. I was an Emergency Medical Technician, Basic and assisted the paramedics in this EMS-P level service, often building strong relationships with patient during, and post-care.

As a Chaplain Resident involved in the Clinical Pastoral Education (C.P.E.) program, I trained to provide spiritual assessment, create care plans, and make appropriate chartings in the medical record for patients and families in my assigned areas. I responded to emergency situations including Code Blue trauma alerts, and patient deaths and am on-call as needed. I was an intermediary between healthcare staff and a patient's visitors, providing support to all during such periods of crisis. I attended to the spiritual and emotional needs of staff and other hospital personnel, which was always informed by and respectful of religious diversity. I was involved in the planning and implementation of appropriate worship services, as needed. I often attended and participated in patient care conference / interdisciplinary team meetings as appropriate. I provided bereavement support to families of deceased patients, offering emotional support and religious ritual as appropriate. I worked to achieve positive and cooperative relationships. I learned to approach conflict constructively, helping to identify and solve problems.

I was responsible for road and patrol over a 1700 acre recreational facility. But my most important work was building relationships with the many owners and their guests which greatly mitigated problems when they occurred. I enforced rules of the Association & and worked closely with the county Sheriff's Department when necessary. All officers were trained in use of self-defense and de-escalation tactics. I was the EMS Site Coordinator, training all Public Safety personnel to ITLS & IDPH 1st Responder standards. This included ordering EMS supplies, maintaining inventory, and keeping in good repair all medical gear. I assisted personnel in keeping their certifications current.

I engaged in normal pastoral duties including preaching, teaching, visitation, and considerable community outreach. Set-up local pastoral ministerium and reached out to other area ministers, maintaining positive relationships regardless of spiritual/denominational affiliations. I also provided counseling for members of the community and did several weddings and funerals for members of the community. Also became a basic and advanced peer member for Critical Incident Stress Management for emergency workers, working with area medical, police and fire over difficult calls.
