SEARCH’s staff are cultural resource industry leaders, pioneers, and subject matter experts across 45 Market, Regional, and Research Sectors. Division Director, State Historic Preservation Officer
Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer, Compliance And Review
As the Deputy SHPO for Compliance and Review, I consult with federal and state agencies, municipalities, Native American Tribes, and the public on the effects of development and restoration projects on historic and archaeological resources. The majority of this consultation is done pursuant to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, and Chapter 267, Florida Statutes. I oversee the operation of the Compliance and Review Section in the Bureau of Historic Preservation, including the supervision of ten archaeologists, architectural historians, and historic preservationists. In this capacity, I advise on and approve over 6,000 project and report reviews per year. I also regularly collaborate with colleagues in the Bureau on issues relating to the eligibility of historic structures and archaeological sites to the National Register of Historic Places, and evaluate properties' eligibility as part of the Section 106 review process. I frequently consult on the development of Programmatic Agreements, Memoranda of Agreement, and other documents with governmental agencies and Native American Tribes to memorialize programmatic alternatives to standard statutory processes, and to mitigate adverse effects to historic and archaeological properties resulting from development, restoration activities, or other actions.
Archeological Technician
My major duties include conducting specialized archaeological and GIS analyses and conducting archaeological monitoring, surveys, and excavations pursuant to Section 106 and 110 of the NHPA. I also participate in field and laboratory research pursuant to the establishment of National Historic Landmarks. I collaborate with other archeologists in laboratory procedures, including analyzing, accessioning, cataloging, and preserving artifacts and data generated by field activities. I implement archaeological work that meets National Park Service and professional requirements, including developing short-term staffing and budgetary requirements. All activities occur within budget and in compliance with federal, state, and local laws, regulations, policies, and guidelines.
Instructor, Department Of Anthropology
Instructor/Teaching And Research Assistant
Duties at FSU included instructing introductory and advanced undergraduate courses in archaeology, assisting professors with teaching duties, supervising graduate teaching instructors, supervising field school students, and grant writing. Though I was supervised by my Ph.D. advisor, the majority of the work was self-directed. While developing curricula for an Archaeological Science Laboratory course, I supervised the teaching and grading responsibilities of up to 5 graduate teaching assistants.
Historical Programs Manager
My responsibilities included documenting, investigating, mapping, and conducting research on over 30 historic homes and home sites on a 1000 acre rural historic landscape in northern Virginia. I administered a program engaging architectural historians and historians in the stabilization and restoration of historic structures, utilizing the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. I also spearheaded curriculum development integrating archaeology and cultural resources educational material with environmental and ecological material. I served as an organizational liaison with city, county, and state elected and appointed officials on issues relating to development rights, historic and cultural resource management and preservation, and prepared National Register of Historic Places Nominations.
