After completing four and a half years with the business advisory team at BDO, an opportunity came up in our Corporate Advisory team. At BDO, this is made up of a corporate finance team and a business recovery and insolvency team. I primarily was recruited for a role in corporate finance which includes performing analyses and compiling due diligence reports for business acquisitions (buy side), undertaking valuations of businesses and some litigation support. However, there is some cross over with the BRIS team where I have compiled some investigative accountant’s reports. These reports include first understanding the business' immediate and short-term obligations, usually requiring a short-term cash flow forecast to be compiled, followed by identifying the key pain points for the business and lastly to work with management to devise, implement and monitor solutions to achieve whichever objectives are defined (whether this is a return to profitability, a phased wind down of the business, resizing of the business, a succession plan etc.).

Initially, training as an accountant in public practice, the principal focus is on meeting compliance deadlines for our clients. For me, this started out as tax returns and sets of financial statements for Trusts and small Companies. Over time, the size of the entities I was dealing with got larger and I had a particular interest with clients in the building industry. As I became a senior in our team, my focus had shifted to delivering more advisory work, working with clients with a greater focus on future objectives. This ranged across various types of engagements including preparing twelve month forecasts, finding process efficiencies and assisting our specialist strategy team in developing strategies for various clients.

Campus Living Villages (CLV) run some of the accommodation available to students studying at the University of Canterbury. I was filling in a temporary vacancy the business had for their management accountant. This secondment ended up being over the Covid-19 lockdown period, and with CLV being defined an essential service, we operated through (with most of the team working from home).This role required preparing month end accounts for two different entities, assisting with the FY21 – FY23 budgeting process and general operational activities such as raising purchase orders, applying charges to students (for rent) and communicating with UC.

For this role, I was seconded to Synlait to assist the supply planning team primarily maintaining a rolling three-year production forecast. This required balancing assumptions and constraints such as the forecast milk supply and milk types supplied, work centre capacities, customer orders and pricing of different products.This gave me an introduction to the dairy sector and was my first full-time position in a commercial role. Certain skills required for this role included being able to analyse and manipulate large data sets, make informed decisions and to communicate with various teams around the organisation either to collect or to present information. This role also trained me to be highly proficient with the use of Microsoft Excel.

NZTR provided me with my first role where I got to employ some of my accounting knowledge. Here, I worked within the ‘IR3 team’ which involved contacting clients to discuss their expenses, check for other income tax types or to query certain gaps in information to complete their tax return. This also required applying tax legislation for a range of different scenarios. I worked at NZTR whilst in my last year of study at UC.
