I served as the Legislative & Public Affairs Officer with Albemarle County Public Schools, a 14,000 student, 2,500 employee school division located in Charlottesville, VA. In this role I had principal responsibility of two key areas of the organization’s operations: the Legislative Affairs Program, which includes government relations, public policy, and advocacy; and the Public Affairs Program, which includes media relations, business relations, and grant writing. These responsibilities required me to design, implement, and evaluate programming, communicate with internal and external stakeholders, and to represent the school division in a variety of public contexts, including the state legislature, the United States House of Representatives and Senate, business and non-profit roundtable forums, and community advisory councils. Part of the senior leadership team, this work helped the organization achieve its strategic goals, impacted its financial standing, and it further strengthened the division’s influence and reputation throughout the state.

Charlottesville Tomorrow is a non-profit community news website that covers quality of life issues, such as land use, community design, and public education in Charlottesville and Albemarle County, Virginia. My reporting was recognized by the Smithsonian Institute, the Virginia Press Association with 17 awards for news reporting, multimedia reporting and photography, and the Virginia School Boards Association.As the Education Reporter I researched and wrote news and feature stories that frequently required me to synthesize complex public education policy into common language. I contributed to Soundboard--a weekly public affairs radio program in partnership with the University of Virginia--and I produced multi-media content such as photo essays and digital timelines for our website.Charlottesville Tomorrow maintains www.cvilletomorrow.org, and has a print partnership with the Daily Progress, central Virginia's newspaper of record.

I received a university fellowship, and during my time in Belfast published work in leading international literary journals, such as Poetry London, Poetry Ireland Review, and Manchester Review.

Through my host organization, the river conservation group Friends of the Rappahannock, I conducted field research, wrote, and edited copy for the Rappahannock River Trail Map and Guidebook.In addition to developing and implementing technology training for the Guidebook, I coordinated volunteers, served as a liaison on numerous community committees, and supervised the organization's rain barrel production program.
