PhD on the topic of novel biofuels to replace fossil diesel in heavy-duty diesel engines. New biofuels will be synthesised from simple chemicals which can be isolated from plant biomass. The fuels designed will not be based on current biofuel efforts to replace diesel, such as biodiesel. In order to test how viable these new fuels are, a commercially available Volvo D8K engine has been purchased with minor modifications made to facilitate combustion research. The engine was first available on the market in 2013 and is Euro 6 compliant, as well as being advertised as 'Biofuel ready'. To move forward with efforts in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions it is important to develop biofuels with an easy production method and does not compete with the food markets of a growing population.

Worked on the synthesis and study of anion transporters. Medical issues caused by anion imbalance in cells, such as cystic fibrosis being an imbalance of chloride, can be treated using these transporters. Current medicine and treatment for cystic fibrosis only alleviates the symptoms of the disease, but cannot actively treat the disease itself. Finding an effective anion transporter, which can help correct the ion imbalance within cells will treat the disease itself instead of reducing severity of symptoms.Cystic fibrosis is caused by the cell channel proteins being defective. The transporters I worked on synthesising and testing hopefully can be used a treatment by performing the intended function of the non-functioning cell channel proteins.

Design of experiment research. Using the SAS JMP software to design an experiment that will produce the optimum reaction conditions. Utilizing the software to predict the optimum conditions for a high percentage yield, whilst minimising power usage, so that there is an overall in crease the sustainability of the reaction. To do this, judgment of various reaction conditions was needed, and setting the softwares parametres to only suggest a feasible reaction, that should be the optimum reaction design. Using this research to produce a compact guide to be used by other academic researchers within the university to further increase the sustainability of their own research and reactions.

Progression Industry is a globally operating entrepreneurial company, which aims to excel in researching and developing innovative green technologies, products and services for the automotive industry and automotive aftermarketI successfully worked on the conversion of technical lignin into diesel soluble components. This work was brought about from the need to increase biofuel use worldwide. The project moved from initial suggestion to proved working results during my duration with the project.

Cross referencing the clients that will most affected by the change, highlighting areas that need to be dealt with, and presenting this as usable information, for employees of interest to act upon. Shadowing and assisting a mining engineer in the planning and organisation of mineral excavation for a new client. This involved using judgement to create a plan for the excavation of new mine, which needed a balance between the rate of mineral extraction, and the rate at which waste could be removed.
