A PhD Fellowship at the core program of Molecular Basis of Disease (MBD), aiming to provide outstanding pre-doctoral students with training in the latest concepts and cutting-edge technology in computational biomedicine. PhD fellows work with faculty across the six interdisciplinary departments of Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics and Statistics, Neuroscience, and Physics and Astronomy to gain the knowledge and tools required to close the gaps between basic science research, translational research, and clinical application. This program is apart of the Institute for Quantitative and Computational Biology department at UCLA. This program provides students with hands-on bioinformatics workshops that cover fundamental next generation sequencing data and statistical analysis methods. After the workshops, Tim was matched into Dr. Jason Ernst Lab were I analyzed genes and genomes by evaluating the chromatin state activity of K562 cell line by leveraging CRISPR-Cas9 based epigenetic regulatory element screening (CERES) data. This research project required me to develop a pipeline to better understand the biological systems of the K562 cell line. He incorporated new next-generation data from CERES assay to previous NGS applications such as CRISPR and MPRA.
