About Timothy Harding
My chief work aim now that I have retired from university teaching is to write thoroughly researched historical and biographical articles and books. My latest book "Steinitz in London," was published by McFarland in September 2020, its printing having been delayed by several months due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This work was the product of many years' research, should be a revolution in Steinitz studies. It is a biography and game collection about the European phase of the first World Chess Champion's career, especially the 20 years he lived in England (1862-1882) but also covering his early years in Prague and Vienna. The final two chapters deal with his brief return to England in 1883 and his final visits in the late 1890s.An 8-page article by me about Steinitz was published in issue 2020/7 of the magazine New In Chess, one of the leading magazines about the game in the world.Last year (shortly before the Covid-19 pandemic) I completed my qualification as a FIDE Arbiter and the title has now been ratified, This is a necessary qualification to manage and referee international chess tournaments and matches). In future years it may be possible to work towards the highest qualification level, International Arbiter. However I shall not have an opportunity to perform these functions until chess competitions normalise (or establish a "new normal"), later in 2021 I hope.My previous published book "British Chess Literature to 1914: a Handbook for Historians" was published in April 2018. It surveys chess magazines, chess columns and chess books published in the UK up to that date and a final chapter gives personal advice to would-be and current chess history researchers. It won an award from the Chess Journalists of America in 2018.My previous major biography of a Victorian chess master, Joseph Henry Blackburne, on which I worked for two and a half years, was published in September 2015. Reviews were excellent and the book has been reprinted in hardcover. I am available to write articles for chess websites, and consultancy & commission work.
Listed skills include Publishing, Books, Historical Research, Proofreading, and 34 others.
