My initial franchising success was achieved with Medicine Shoppe International®, where I guided domestic development to more than 1,300 locations and pioneered the International Department, adding another 240 stores in 8 countries. The offshore expansion was immediately profitable because of the leverage achieved as franchisees grew store counts with little additional cost to the company after the initial organization was established. I built on that success by negotiating franchise agreements for more than 15 countries and adding 95+ international units for Build-A-Bear Workshop®. This global expansion effort increased brand recognition, positioned the company for sustainable growth worldwide and added millions of dollars directly to the bottom line. In both cases, I built internal organizations that created value from what didn’t exist before—processes for identifying prospects, franchisee sales techniques, as well as training materials and operations procedures. I derive great satisfaction from researching each country’s unique culture and business climate, then working with the local partner to adapt the brand concept for that overseas market. Finding, inspiring and mentoring international entrepreneurs who bring value to the brand is essential for mutual success. Every day is unique as I work closely with franchisees through the sales, training and operations processes at various stages of their business growth.
