Associate General Counsel / Chief Privacy Counsel
Current■ Lead privacy and data security legal efforts, including compliance review and policy review and development, for a fully accredited for-profit university. ■ Manage all commercial transaction legal work and the university’s intellectual property portfolio, in addition to providing legal consultation across all departments. ■ Provide legal review and advice on university-wide information security and privacy programs and best practices, including developing external and internal privacy policies and notices and evaluating information security incident/breach response plans. ■ Provide legal analysis and advice on State Consumer Privacy Statutes (e.g., the CCPA, CPRA, CPA, and VCDPA), the Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography & Marketing Act (CAN-SPAM), the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA), the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA), Do Not Call (DNC) statues, the Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA), the European Union General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and Federal and State Data Breach Laws.■ Ensure response procedures are in place for data security and privacy incidents; classify data security and privacy incidents and advise university officials on data privacy and classification standards.■ Supervise and mentor a Senior Corporate Counsel, a Senior Supervising Paralegal, and a Senior Paralegal in handling and assisting in legal matters.■ Advise C-Level executives and Senior VPs on commercial and technology contracts, intellectual property, and privacy matters.■ Collaborate with the Ethics & Compliance Department to implement compliance programs and policies.■ Protect and manage patent, trademark, and copyright portfolios.■ Develop, review, update and maintain a commercial contracts playbook and contract templates.Key Accomplishments■ Led the university’s first CCPA compliance efforts in 2019 and handed off ongoing administration to the University’s Office of Ethics & Compliance.
