By combining existing state-of-the-art ocean floor mapping technology with new innovations in autonomous unmanned surface vehicle technology and Cloud based data processing, the team was able to rise to the difficult challenges posed by XPRIZE.Mapping over 500 sq. km in over 4000 meters of water depth off the coast of Greece, GEBCO-NF Alumni prevailed over 32 other competing teams to win the Grand Prize of $4 million. The team has now joined forces with mapthegaps.org to create an NGO focused on promoting bathymetry missions, data processing and promoting awareness about the need to map our oceans and large water bodies. Sponsored by The Nippon Foundation, who are also supporting the global initiative, Seabed 2030, to fully map the ocean floor by 2030, the GEBCO-NF Alumni team directly supports the Seabed 2030 effort.
