Chapter Four. Doing 'this' againBack to startup life with FactoryFix.com. We're bringing smart recruiting to manufacturing just when it needs it most.Chapter Three. A higher callingAfter 5 years in startups, I've moved on to non-profits. Same budget, new mission!Chapter Two. DisruptedIn the late winter of 2011, I got an email from an entrepreneur looking for a tech with solid communication skills. Finally, the degree in English pays off! We met and discussed her project and then she asked, "Would you be willing to move to Boston for 3 months?" A couple weeks later I was in Boston, attending Techstars, and my world was forever changed. As the program drew to a close, director Katie Rae asked the group what we planned to do back in the real world. I said, "This. This is what I'm going to do." Her reply, "You can't do 'this' forever."She's probably right, but I haven't found out yet. When I got back to Madison, I quit my job and started MobileIgniter with long-time conspirator Dominic DiMarco. Nine months later we were in the gener8tor program and pretty sure I was still doing "this."Eventually, the program ended and into the real world we plunged. But, both Dominic and I actively work with aspiring entrepreneurs around Madison, sharing what we have learned with anyone who asks the right questions. We're still doing "this." Chapter One. I find the InternetIn '95, having only used the web for a few months, I naively sent an email to a millionaire. To my surprise, he replied. The answer came a few hours after I sent the message. It said something to the effect, "Sorry it took so long to respond. I was playing with my grandkid." I wish I still had that email. It was the inspiration for my career. The internet allows anyone to contact anyone, easily, inexpensively and quickly. People would be likely to participate because of the low barrier to entry. As I soon learned by way of making a few web pages, this tech let communication scale easily. Hooked.
