"What is the connection between history and accounting?" That is the question someone invariable asks upon learning about my background. I majored in history in college, and that was followed by a Master's from the University of London and a Ph.D. from Columbia University. My doctoral thesis was interesting but not particularly marketable, and I remained on campus holding several positions in admissions and financial aid. After a number of years in university administration I realized that my work was neither sufficiently challenging nor fulfilling. Giving myself a choice between law and tax, I returned to school to earn yet another degree in accounting. In July 1998 I left my home in New York State and arrived in Atlanta with my family, not knowing anyone, to look for a position in tax. While most accounting firms were initially curious about this career changer but ultimately skeptical about hiring a 40-year old as an entry-level staff, Bennett Thrasher offered me a new home where I still remain today. I was given the opportunity to learn about and work with all forms of taxation at my own pace, which satisfied my intellectual curiosity and desire to accelerate my new career.Today I manage tax and consulting engagements for corporations, partnerships, trusts and individuals, and assist nonprofits with their applications for tax-exempt status and filing obligations. To answer the question posed at the beginning, I have managed to transfer the research and analytical skills I learned in the academic world to public accounting. I enjoy tax research, training interns and staff, and working closely with clients to allay their concerns and answer their questions, handle their compliance needs, and help them to achieve tax savings.
