About Tim Ragan - Business Engineer

Think your work world is turbulent now? You ain't seen nothing yet...[21-March-2020 note: This summary was written several years prior of our current corona virus global pandemic. The work world is definitely highly disrupted with this immediate crisis -- my belief is that well after this particular crisis abates, we'll continue to receive massive shocks to the system in the years ahead. If you believe the same, you might want to read on.]My big takeaway from 35 years of incredibly varied technology infused work projects: we have entered a multi-decade period of increasing turbulence that is impacting each of us in profound - and often unsettling - ways. Unfortunately, our institutions and work concepts are designed around historic models of employment and work practices, and are highly resistant to the adaptation, agility, and rapid evolution demanded by our modern economy.Until we tackle this fundamental design limitation, our organizations will continue to struggle to deliver the performance demanded of them, further stressing the work teams they depend on and driving increasing levels of disruption and stress in our individual careers. Re-purposing ourselves, our teams & our organizations for sustainable success in our modern world is the design challenge that fascinates me; it is where I focus and apply my skills and training in systems-thinking, strategic design, team alignment, and process and tool development. My work fascination covers four themes: 1 -- how to help us each become more effective Free Agents (a Business of One); 2 -- leveraging the Free Agent workforce to build greater levels of adaptability and resilience into our organizations;3 -- business models that leverage Free Agents collaborating to create new offerings;4 -- evolution of our social safety net to encourage Free Agency across the broader economy.Have I got it all figured out? Not by a long shot. It's a massively complex area that will keep me engaged for years to come...To date, I've developed a set of practical and easy-to-implement "performance tool kits" for driving career, team, and organizational success. I'm continually researching, piloting, and adding new tools to the tool kit.Want to dive deeper into this? Please reach out and connect up so we can explore how to collaborate to mutual advantage... I'm looking forward to meeting you!http://calendly.com/tragan

  • Career Constructors
    Business Engineer
Career Constructors Aug 2016 - Present
    Ottawa, Canada Area
Career Constructors is built around 2 basic beliefs, reflected in the design and simplicity of all of our performance tool-kits, workshops and related facilitation, coaching, and mentor services for organizations and individuals:1. FOR INDIVIDUALS: To continue to survive and thrive in the ever-increasingly turbulent 21st century work world, all individuals must develop the core skill set of being able to gracefully and purposefully transition from role to role in a timely & effective fashion; 2. IN ORGANIZATIONS, to be effective in driving meaningful performance improvement in our turbulent times, the strategies and tactics related to managing "soft skills" and "the hard stuff" can no longer be separated out and handed to different parts of the organization. These must be fused together at employee, team, and mission levels to achieve meaningful and sustainable performance gains. The express purpose of Career Constructors -- by embracing systems thinking and leveraging engineering rigor, we deliver proven & practical performance tools that help people, teams, and organizations drive sustainable high performance in a turbulent, ever-changing world of work.

  • Career Coaching International
    Business Owner
Career Coaching International Aug 2009 - Jul 2016
    Ottawa, Canada Area
In mid 2009 I purchased CCI; what immediately attracted me was it's solid, step-by-step proprietary methodology that it employed to help their clients find their "perfect job" in record time.  It was apparent to me that I had come across a "toolkit" that started to truly address the challenge of "21st century career transition as a core skill set". For 6 years I operated the company as Career Coaching International and I used that time for researching and strengthening the basic methodology we employ; I also actively experimented with different configurations of coaching support, small group networking packages, and physical and virtual service delivery to see what worked best at delivering sustainable results for our clients. I worked on condensing the basic approach to both a workshop format and online training so it could be introduced more effectively to larger audiences. All that has been going on under the hood over several years; in August 2016 I relaunched the company as Career Constructors, with a full line of organizational and individual workshops and support packages to help people develop true mastery of their professional careers and, by extension, their lives.
  • University Of Ottawa
    Adjunct Professor
University Of Ottawa Sep 2004 - Apr 2013
    Ottawa, Canada Area
Two conflicting statements stick out around structured education -- the 1st is "Those that can, do. Those that can't, teach."The 2nd statement? "If you truly want to understand something, you need to teach it."I've experienced both of those first-hand, and we've probably all had a teacher or professor over the years that embodied the first statement. I hope my students never think that way of me...After decades of hands-on operational experience and then going on to teach for a number of years, I've come to see the truth in the 2nd statement -- to really learn something deeply you need to be able to teach it to others and be open to their feedback, questions, criticisms and whatever else they choose to share with you. This feedback loop is the life-blood of continual learning and improvement... I got lots of feedback from my teaching and while it wasn't always as positive as I would have liked, it was all very useful.Over 8 years of teaching duties, I taught Business Processing Re-engineering (BPR), Marketing Strategy, International Business, Governance, and "Business & Society" at the Telfer School of Management at undergraduate and graduate levels. "Business & Society" examines the external environment of business, its relationship with government and civil society, and the moral and ethical implications of modern business -- governance writ large. Fascinating stuff...
  • Videospheres
    President & Ceo
    Videospheres Jan 2001 - May 2002
Hired into the fledging start-up as CEO to shape and commercialize the technology vision of the founding team. We navigated the company through the dramatic industry meltdown of 2001-2002 while performing ongoing strategic triage (also referred to as pivoting....) to identify and build out core business offering to ensure the company's survival. An exciting white-knuckled roller-coaster ride through a defining chapter of the technology industry...
  • Alcatel
    Avp, Ebusiness & Strategic Planning
    Alcatel May 2000 - Dec 2000
My role in this transition was to ensure the various global and regional marketing and support functions of Newbridge were fully aligned into the most appropriate parts of Alcatel such that the combined company could best benefit from Newbridge's genetic coding.Over my 8 months, I performed extensive "shuttle diplomacy" between Paris, Kanata, Dallas, and various other Alcatel/Newbridge locations to ensure that all stakeholders realized they were key to the ongoing success of the venture...In short order, the former Newbridge e-marketing team became the Centre of Excellence in the new Alcatel for all the e-business activities of the new $30B organization, adding significantly to the robustness and influence of the Newbridge DNA in the new expanded Alcatel.Mission Accomplished.
  • Newbridge Networks
    Avp Partners Marketing
    Newbridge Networks Dec 1993 - May 2000
Over the six plus years at Newbridge I was fortunate enough to meet and work with really incredible talent, immerse in an oversea posting (UK/Europe for 3 years), run European and Global functions, and generally get involved in all aspects of the strategy and operations of a major data communications manufacturer. It was a truly great ride, culminating in the chance to perform a key role as part of a small strategy group working on the consideration and sizing of "all strategic options" for Newbridge's future. What a blast, what people, what an industry, and what an education. Enough said.
  • Nortel Networks
    Market Analyst
    Nortel Networks Jul 1992 - Dec 1993
Over a period of 18 months, Nortel provided me the best possible education on the evolving business of data networking. Working in the division that owned the largest market share of the X.25 (packet switching) network, I took various business and technology courses in X.25, Frame Relay and ATM, got to examine emerging competitors and their business capabilities in depth, and also got to analyze our own customer base in detail. All in all, a great, extensive data networking education packed into less than 2 years...!!Almost forgot -- won the President's Award for building the company's most effective competitive and market intelligence capabilities. A nice note to exit on....
