In my current position as a Senior Civil Engineer within City Development at the City of Thornton, I work with developers and private sector consultants to take new development projects through the entitlements and construction documents process. I manage some of the staff within Development Engineering, in addition to reviewing all of the plans and reports for each project and ensure that each project adheres to all city, regional, state, and federal requirements. This position takes advantage of my past work experience in private sector development design, municipal capital improvement projects, and municipal traffic engineering, as it requires extensive knowledge of plats, grading, drainage, utilities, roadway design, street lights, traffic signs, pavement markings, bicycle facility design, pedestrian facility design, retail site design, commercial site design, and school site design. Every day brings new design challenges, keeping things interesting.

Directed team members in the design of several large residential subdivisions in the Denver suburbs as well as industrial parks in western Colorado and Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Work included detailed drainage and detention studies, storm sewer design, roadway design and detailed grading for each site. Had close contact with the clients and other consultants. Worked in a contract position as a draftsman on architecture projects in the Chicago area. Projects included the courtroom expansion project in the Federal Center in the E.M. Dirksen Federal Building in downtown Chicago.

Worked as a research assistant within the Department of Civil Engineering. Helped to set up a testing facility in northern Kentucky to study the effects of shear key designs on box beam bridges. Also helped in the forensic investigation for the Ohio Department of Transportation of a failed box beam bridge in rural southeast Ohio. This investigation involved the instrumentation of the bridge and assistance with the analysis of collected data.

As a Civil Engineering Co-Op student I helped in the preparation of civil engineering construction documents for various park and roadway projects throughout the State of Ohio. In this role I was able to become proficient with manual and AutoCAD drafting of engineering drawings and with conducting topographic surveys and level loops in the field. While in this role I was introduced to roadway design and rehabilitation techniques and with site grading design.

In my role as a Civil Engineering Co-Op student I learned the basics of Construction Management. These skills included quantity takeoff, cost estimating, construction trades supervision, RFI and Change Order management, and construction site layout. In my time with this company I worked on a variety of projects including the construction of a new Children's Hospital tower in Cincinnati and a medical office building in Mason, OH.
