  • Space Syntax Limited
    Managing Director
Space Syntax Limited Oct 1995 - Present
Space mattersThe spatial layout of buildings and urban places exerts a powerful influence on human behaviour. The way that places connect is directly related to the way that people move, interact and transact.Well designed spatial layouts produce safe and vibrant places and, in doing so, create enormous levels of social, economic and environmental capital.Poor layouts risk functional failure, loss of investment and social harm. The urban landscape is littered with failed development, much of it caused by misunderstanding how spatial layout affects human performance.Space Syntax provides a trusted, evidence-based approach to the analysis and design of spatial layout patterns. We help people to see, in clear and straightforward terms, how buildings and urban places can be designed to optimise their functional performance. Our successful track record includes some of the world's most challenging and prestigious projects. We have pioneered a powerful technology that demonstrates the key role of spatial layout in shaping patterns of human behaviour. These patterns include movement on foot, on cycles and in vehicles; wayfinding and purchasing in retail environments; vulnerability and criminal activity in buildings and urban settings; co-presence and communications in the workplace.Owners, investors and occupiers each benefit from the use of Space Syntax to create vibrant, safe and sustainable real estate developments. Our technology is underpinned by spatial design principles that have influenced development policy throughout the world. We add value through a unique service offer:We create places by producing visionary planning and design ideas. We shape knowledge by undertaking research & developing technology. We inform practice by training and licensing people to use our technology. We are expert, independent and widely respected for the support we provide to public, private and community-based decision takers.

    Volunteer
Friends Of The Westbrook & Stonebridge Pond May 2013 - Present
    Faversham, England, United Kingdom
A voluntary community group working to improve the Westbrook and Stonebridge Pond for local people and wildlife. Our aims are:To conserve and enhance the local environment in the area around the Westbrook Stream and the public areas around Stonebridge Pond, Faversham, Kent, for the benefit of people, flora and fauna. To encourage the goodwill, education and involvement of the wider community. To foster community spirit and encourage civic pride and wider social benefits. The Westbrook is a globally rare chalk stream, designated as Priority Habitat – a range of semi-natural habitat types that have been identified as being the most threatened and requiring conservation action. As well as being an important for ecology the Westbrook and Stonebridge Pond has a fascinating history as it was fundamental to local gunpowder manufacture and, later, watercress growing. Faversham was the centre of the nation’s explosives industry for 400 years and Chart Mills, along the stream, very probably supplied gunpowder for the Battles of Trafalgar and Waterloo. The Westbrook and Stonebridge Pond are these days designated local green spaces in Faversham. Westbrook Walk is an important green route through west Faversham and Stonebridge Pond is a local beauty spot where families have fed the ducks and waterfowl for generations.

  • The London Promenade Company
    Director
The London Promenade Company Jun 2007 - Present
The London Promenade project is a proposal to create a new extension to the existing promenade at the South Bank Centre, eastwards from Gabriel’s Wharf, along the south bank of the River Thames, via Bankside, Borough Market, and the Pool of London to connect with the existing jetty at Butler's Wharf.Significantly enlarged, incorporating jetties and piers, over the water and under bridges, the London Promenade would benefit the capital as a whole by creating a new, accessible, major waterfront park for the 21st century. The London Promenade would refocus attention on the River Thames at the heart of London and revitalise the river; define the South Bank as the new cultural quarter for London and provide a spectacular and safe venue for large celebrations. Of utmost importance would be its reinforcement of London’s image and identity, the perception in which it is held in the eyes of the world.
