Kate has been a Member of Parliament since May 2001. She is the inaugural winner of the Commonwealth Parliamentarian of the Year Award in 2022. She was recognised for working to promote women and people with disabilities in her community, working to address and combat domestic violence and embracing innovation and new ideas as the President of the Legislative Council, Parliament in Australia (2017-2021). Kate is the Chair and Australian Region Steering Committee Representative of the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians, Australia Region, 2022-2025. My role as Electorate Officer is to manage the electorate office and liaise with constituents and others on Kate's behalf. The position is responsible for the collation, research, analysis and provision of information as required, and is an initial point of contact for constituent enquiries and providing sensitive and confidential advocacy and assistance to members of the electorate.

Executive Officer to the President of the Legislative Council.The Executive Officer ensures the efficient operation of the President’s Office by providing a broad range of high-level executive support functions to the President. The President of the Legislative Council is the Presiding Officer and spokesperson for the Legislative Council. Together with the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, the President is responsible for the overall management of the Parliament. The President also acts as ambassador for the House and the Parliament of Western Australia, which involves meeting and hosting representatives from other governments, organisations and countries. The Department of the Legislative Council is responsible, not to the government of the day, but to the Legislative Council and its elected members. Department staff are apolitical and non-partisan and serve all members equally.

Kate is a Member for the South Metropolitan Region, she was Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council and Shadow Minister for Industrial Relations; Commerce; Information Communications Technology; Small Business; Electoral Affairs when I worked in her electorate office.Some of my duties included: providing personal assistance, secretarial and administrative support to the Member; provide support to the Member to prepare for Parliamentary sittings, as required analyse bills and legislation and brief the Member, preparation of speaking notes and speeches for the Member, undertake or arrange research as required by the Member. Also, managing the day to day operation of the electorate office, liaising with organisations, groups and individuals in the public and private sectors on behalf of the Member and constituents, provide assistance to constituents who contact the office with a range of enquiries, problems and requests for information by undertaking any necessary research; undertake investigations and research and preparing letters, research papers, speeches, press releases, newsletter, brochures etc on behalf of the Member, represent and/or accompany the Member at community meetings and other events as directed.

I worked as a Research Officer for Hon Dr Sally Talbot MLC, Member for the South West Region. When I worked with Dr Talbot she was the Shadow Minister for Mental Health; Disability Services; and Child Protection. Prior to that, Sally was the Shadow Minister for Environment; Climate Change; Indigenous Affairs; Lands; and Youth. My roles included: monitor the media during Parliamentary sittings and keep the Member informed, undertake research as required by the Member and constituent services.

Prior to his retirement on 22 May 2013, I worked as a Research Officer for Hon Jon Ford MLC, Member for Mining and Pastoral, Shadow Minister for Mines and Petroleum; Fisheries; Kimberley; Pilbara; Gascoyne; Mid West. I undertook a range of administration duties, as well as responding to enquiries from people in relation to the Member’s portfolio areas. Liaising with Government departments and other organisations and undertaking research as required by the Member.
