  • Algwa Nsw (Australian Local Government Women’S Association Nsw)
    Past Executive Member
Algwa Nsw (Australian Local Government Women’S Association Nsw) May 2009 - Mar 2010
    Sydney
Australian Local Government Women's Association was created in Canberra on October 15, 1951, at a meeting held in the hotel suite of Councillor Mrs Violet Lambert of Fern Tree Gully Shire Council, Victoria, by 16 local government women drawn from all States of Australia then attending the Jubilee Women's Convention in the Jubilee Year of the Commonwealth of Australia (19/01/1951). It was probably the only far reaching outcome of this great conference. A provisional committee was elected with representation from most States of Australia. A permanent national organisation took shape at the First National Conference in Canberra, October 19, 1966, attended by 53 people. Alderman Marjorie GE Propsting of Lane Cove, NSW was chosen as National President, a position she held until 1970.ALGWA measures its success by the number of women encouraged to join Local Government. In 1951, when ALGWA was first organised, only 54 women had been elected. By December 1974 a total of 877 women had been elected in Australia, of whom 460 were then sitting members. While South Australia had the first woman in local government with Mrs Susan Grace Benny, JP, elected in 1919, NSW has been the most successful state. In 1974, 169 women were elected, the highest number elected up to that time in any one State, and the first woman Lord Mayor in Australia (Alderman Lilian M Fowler, MBE, MLA, JP, Newtown Municipal Council) was elected. At the 1995 elections 406 women were elected in NSW (22.5%). There were 27 women Mayors (15%) and 37 Deputy Mayors but there were still 12 Councils with no women at all.
  • Australian Technical College – Central Western Nsw
    Board Director
Australian Technical College – Central Western Nsw Jan 2007 - Jan 2009
    Dubbo
Australian Technical Colleges (ATCs) were a class of Australian senior secondary school funded by the Australian federal government between 2005 and 2009. The Australian Technical College program ceased on 31 December 2009. All 24 ATCs were integrated into existing education and training systems (state/territory government, catholic and anglican), with some continuing as stand-alone independent schools.[1]They delivered vocational education courses to Year 11 and 12 students, predominantly 16-18 year olds. Some colleges had a single campus, while others had multiple campusesAccording to the Australian constitution, education is the responsibility of the state and territory governments; although the federal government does partially fund private schools, vocational and higher education. Vocational education funding however was previously funnelled through the states and territories. These colleges' direct federal funding is thus unusual for this reason alone. Their appearance is part of the breakdown of cooperative federalism caused by the increasing centralism of the national government and party-political differences with the state and territory governments. Another expression of this was the demise of the former Australian National Training Authority (ANTA) which expressed the political and industrial settlement on training of the 1990s.In 2005, the federal government chose the areas in which these schools were to be established, then advertised for tenders. Some successful tenderers were state or territory governments, others were church groups, others were for-profit companies. Some were combinations of these. Thus some resulting ATCs were government schools, while others are private schools that are predominantly government funded, and at least one exists as a campus-within-a-campus at a state school and a church school. Such a mixed sectoral body of schools had not existed in Australia before, nor had any government founded a private school.
