I spent two weeks at the psychiatric wing of Taipei Royal Veterans Hospital, where I shadowed two senior psychiatrists. I experienced numerous aspects of being a psychiatrist: in-ward rounds, outpatient meetings, research, case studies, evaluation, morning briefings and psychiatric condition conferences. Every night, I would research concepts I did not understand mentioned during the day, such as pain thresholds, amphetamines, shrinking telomeres. Days began with a morning briefing in the psychiatric ward meeting room with all the nurses and psychiatrists, followed by rounds, where mini-interviews were conducted with each patient. Generally, patients were calm and happy to see and talk to the psychiatrist. Yet, many patients with persecutory delusion had daily complaints about nurses. After rounds, we would reconvene to the meeting room deliberate, adjust and confirm prescriptions. After in-ward duties, I would attend case study and evaluation meetings. Occasionally, I would be invited to observe the research wing of the hospital and participate in large-scale psychiatric conferences. Outpatient meetings begin at around 3PM and lasted all the way till 8PM, despite the psychiatrists' work hours ending at 6. Outpatient meetings were incredible. The pace and precision was nothing shy of machine-like. The amount of effort and care provided by the psychiatrist never diminished, even after 100+ meetings. Ridiculously, the psychiatrist - who often appears in the newspaper and has shaken the hand of the president of Taiwan - would still stay late to discuss my experience and concepts I were fascinated by with me. His depth of knowledge was incredible, regarding anything from my readings, he would humbly say “I do not know too much about this” then proceed to enlighten me. The specific example I remember most clearly would be when I brought up gut microbiota and the gut-brain axis. It was an incredible and surprisingly tiring experience, but I enjoyed it so much.
