I never thought about being in a human services career until I took a psychology class in high school. I was fascinated with what I learned and decided soon after that I wanted to go into counseling.For a brief time, I continued a job I held while finishing college—in a bank’s call center. But after being a volunteer with CASA (Court Appointed Volunteer Advocate), I knew I was ready to transition into a career that could make a positive difference for youth and families.I soon joined Child Protective Services in Kentucky as a Social Services Worker, carrying 30+ cases consistently. This was certainly a role where many life-impacting decisions happened every day. I am particularly proud of the families I reunited and the children that were successfully adopted while working there.Now as Program Specialist with Big Brothers Big Sisters, I have an opportunity to bring relationships together—giving at-risk children positive relationships and experiences that contribute to their confidence and development. In my role, I interview and assess potential families and mentors to ensure they are the right fit for our programs.Colleagues would say my strengths include: Empathy: This skill evolved after my brother died when he was four. I learned at a young age that kids don’t deserve the things they have to endure in their lives. Empathy allows me to tune in to what they and their families are going through and provides the insight into the services and programs that would be the right fit.Critical thinking: Along with empathy, is the ability to put together information from all sides to make the right decisions. It is this skill that allows me to make those tough decisions that may not be easy, but must be made.Communication: Verbal communication is often the first way I meet clients. It is the way I demonstrate how much I care and builds trust. (A secret ingredient in my tool box is sharing my interest in video games. Having this common interest makes me more relatable with the youth.) But completing assessments and reviews is also critical in my work. As a case worker, my supervisor complimented me on the quality of the assessments I wrote. My approach in being specific and focusing on action steps was adopted by the rest of the team.Now at BBBS, I continue to use those same skills.
