A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study to investigate the effects of recombinant human erythropoietin (NeoRecormon) on cycling performance and the occurrence of adverse events in well-trained cyclist.

The Centre for Human Drug Research researches new medicine that is tested for the first time in humans. To test the effects of substances with an effect on the brain, measurements are taken on the central nervous system. A research assistant performs these tests and consequently measures activity in the central nervous system. The stage of testing is one that requires a lot of interaction with people while at the same time collecting the results of a test. This has to be done without making mistakes while being on a strict timetable. At CHDR, I have learned to communicate with subjects and patients, to solve problems, to validate computer systems and work well with others. In 2015, I got a certificate of participation: Training Wet Medical Research Involving Human Subjects and Good Clinical Practice (ICH-GCP).

To further discover where my interests lay within the field of Pharmaceutical Science, I started a research internship at the Apotheek Haagse Ziekenhuizen (AHZ) in June 2015. This internship lasted for about 6 months and was in addition to my study. In this in vitro stability study, I determined the stability of colistin methanesulfonate (CMS) in infusion solutions stored in infusion bags and home infusion pumps. I prepared infusion solutions according to the manufacturer product information and carefully chose different storage conditions to reflect clinically conditions, including conditions at home. I could eventually conclude that the medicine is stable over time and suitable for home administration.

In my third year at the VU, I worked on a bachelor project that concerned the stability of nortryptiline, a second-generation tricyclic antidepressant (TCA). I tested the stability of the drug by storing it at different pH levels, light conditions, temperatures and concentrations of hydrogen peroxide with HPLC/MS.
