About Titiksha Fernandes, Ph.D.

I am a systems thinker combined with being an evidence-based research professional who is passionate, yet practical, about leveraging existing resources to solve environmental (not exclusive of economic and social) challenges.Professionally, I am an environmental and economic development policy specialist with a background in economics and development, and nearly 10 years of experience researching and working on topics such as resource efficiency, waste management, circular economy, climate change, renewable energy, sustainability, economic development, regional development, community development, and urban resilience.I received my doctoral degree in Public Policy from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in May 2021 and hold a Bachelor’s in Economics and a Master’s in Economic Development. My research and expertise lie at the nexus of environmental, economic, and social impact and sustainability. I am currently the Program Manager for the Foundation for The Carolinas $26 million endowment, A Way Home, and Mecklenburg County's $6 million program, MeckHOME. Both programs provide assistance for homeless and at-risk families. I am also a Senior Consultant for the HBCU Community Development Corporation, an organization dedicated to revitalize HBCU campuses and surrounding communities.I have previously worked as a technical advisor for the German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ) where I contributed to the launch of the Indian Resource Panel, which established the resource efficiency strategy for India. Some of my other work involved designing and implementing pilot interventions, under the umbrella of sustainable development, which have now been adopted by the Government of India. My doctoral dissertation used a mixed methods research approach to evaluate current solid waste and recycling practices in North Carolina. The study makes recommendations to future scholars, researchers, and practitioners in the field to improve recycling practices and recycling performance measures. I love working with data - quantitative and qualitative and have experience working with international, national, and local datasets, including Census, BLS, CBP. I am always excited by any opportunity to learn new software and programs.
