The research focuses on digital transformation shaping B2B-sales management and leadership.
My master's thesis study investigates Finnish university students attitudes towards professional selling and applying to B2B-sales jobs. The results are out! The students rated Finns as salespeople on average 4,5 in a 1 (really bad) -10 (really great) scale. The average attitude towards professional sales jobs is positive and the average attitude towards importance of sales is negative. The study indicates that the attitude measure alone is not enough to predict students' behaviour. Even if the sverasge attitude towards professional sales jobs was positive, students estimated that they were not very likely to work in B2B-sales or apply to B2B-sales jobs. There is a minor correlation between the positive attitude towards professional sales jobs and positive estimation about applying to B2B-sales job. In this study the motivation measure seems to be a better indicator of the future behaviour than the attitude measure. Another finding is that the perceived autonomy and competence towards the B2B-sales job increases motivation to work in B2B-sales. Professional selling has gone through an enormous change in the past few decades. Instead of just focusing on product features, the salesperson has to know and understand the client's business to be able to offer value for the customer. Globalization has increased the competition and the development of the information systems and digitalization has changed the business environment and knowledge gathering for all. The companies and the salespeople need new capabilities to be able to compete in the modern business environment.The companies are looking at the universities and expecting to get skilled and motivated modern salespeople as the students graduate. This study indicates that the universities can increase students capabilities in professional selling by offering sales courses and thus improve students likelihood to pursue a career in professional selling.
