About Tanya Joosten

Tanya Joosten, Ph.D., is a Senior Scientist, the Director of Digital Learning Research and Development, and an advisor to the Provost for innovation projects at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM). She is also the Founder, Executive Director, and PI of the National Research Center for Distance Education and Technological Advancements (DETA). Dr. Joosten has been recognized by OLC, WCET, and, EdTech, Magazine for her significant contributions to the field.Dr. Joosten has authored numerous publications and has written featured blogs for EDUCAUSE, WCET, and Inside Higher Ed. Her research has achieved notable impact, with one of her articles ranking in the top 5% of all research outputs according to Altmetric and as the third highest-scoring output from the American Journal of Distance Education, established in 1987. Her work has been cited in The Chronicle of Higher Education, Forbes, U.S. News & World Report, and Inside Higher Ed. She has been interviewed for podcasts such as TOPcast, ResearchInAction, and EDUCAUSE.With a background in social sciences and communication, Dr. Joosten has delivered keynote addresses and participated in panels at events, including eLearning Asia, Ed Crunch Moscow, ITC eLearning, SACS COC, SXSWedu, WCET, EDUCAUSE, OLC Accelerate, and UW DTL. I have taught courses in Organizational Communication (topics include theoretical approaches, assimilation and socialization, emotion labor, stress, and burnout, diversity, small groups and decision-making, organizational change, conflict management, and technology), Human Communication and Technology (topics include media characteristics, media selection, forming relationships and networks, organizations and groups, societal implications, and technology horizon), and other courses as needed. I am able to use my first hand experience in teaching and researching courses using technology to inform the needs of the efforts that I lead.

    In 2014, the National Distance Education and Technological Advancement (DETA) Research Center at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee (UWM) was launched with support of a 1.48 mil grant from ED FIPSE. DETA's primary activity was to conduct cross-institutional data collection with 2-year and 4-year Institutions of Higher Education (IHEs). The original partners on the endeavor included UWM, University of Wisconsin System, UW-Extension, Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC), and EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI). The original objective of the DETA Research Center was, and still is, to promote student access and success through evidence-based online learning practices and learning technologies. Since 2014, DETA has expanded their work to partner with IHEs, community organizations, technology companies, and foundations throughout the U.S. and across the globe.
