As a special advisor to the Provost on innovation intiaitives, my responsibilities include:Provide vision to the campus and UW System committees to investigate and deploy emerging technologies, instructional practices, and innovative programs based on national trends, campus goals, faculty and student needs, and resources on the direction of learning technologies, mediated communication, and social technologies.Enhance future development of UWM online, including the degree array, use of new technologies in online degree programs, and external funding opportunities for curricular development.Conduct research with viable agendas for external funding and provide oversight of research staff. Lead design of research studies studying applied problems, including the integration of quantitative and qualitative methods, instrumentation development and administration, data collection and mining, data analysis, and reporting. Engage in data and learning analytics, web data, data visualization, big data methodology, social network analysis, and other evolving methodologies in applied and theoretical applications fostering transdisciplinary research collaborations across units and institutions to establish a competitively-funded program. Secure grants and build vendor partnerships to explore innovation in teaching and research, including emerging practices and technologies, allowing UWM to be responsive to future trends. Excel UWM's national and international reputation in technology enhanced learning and instructional innovation with an emphasis on needs-based evaluation and research through presentation, speaking, and publishing.

After finishing my Bachelor's and Master's at UWM and departing for ASU for my doctorate, I was asked to bring my experience in communication technology and teaching online courses back to UWM in 2003. Since then, I have designed and taught primarily online courses at UWM. I have taught courses in Organizational Communication (topics include theoretical approaches, assimilation and socialization, emotion labor, stress, and burnout, diversity, small groups and decision-making, organizational change, conflict management, and technology), Human Communication and Technology (topics include media characteristics, media selection, forming relationships and networks, organizations and groups, societal implications, and technology horizon), and other courses as needed. I am able to use my first hand experience in teaching and researching courses using technology to inform the needs of the efforts that I lead.

As director, I led the primary instructional support unit by providing strategic planning and oversight of the day to day functions of the UWM Learning Technology Center (LTC) staff in their mission to provide reliable administration of learning technologies, including core learning technologies such as the learning management system (Desire2Learn), student response systems (TurningPoint), ePortfolios, rich media, social media, and others. The goal of the center was to provide timely consultation to faculty and instructors seeking to use these technologies in pedagogically effective ways to improve student outcomes. I worked to ensure the quality of blended and online programs at UWM through leading the ongoing development and offering of the LTC faculty development program for online and blended teaching, the UWM Certificate in Online and Blended Learning, the Joanne Lazirko Innovative Use of Technology award, evaluation planning for online and blended, the online program council, and the online and blended teaching users group. I excelled UWM's national and international reputation for an emphasis on needs-based implementation of emerging technologies through research efforts, provided vision to the campus on the direction of learning technologies and facilitate innovative teaching and learning methods with the UWM teaching community, and disseminated this research at national and international conferences and in publications.In addition, I provided guidance to the staff, teachers and researchers with advanced degrees in their respective disciplines and with many years of experience teaching and supporting technology-enhanced, blended, and online courses, in their efforts to support to instructors in their use of an array of learning technologies, in their managing of their technology projects, and in their research efforts to evaluate emerging technologies.

As the associate director, I oversaw day-to-day operations of the LTC staff (10+ staff), reviewed LTC support mandates, identified effective ways to meet the rapidly increasing demand from the faculty for training, support, and troubleshooting, and represented the LTC & UWM’s interests with respect to conferences and networks outside of the state. DETACenter.org was originally established as the National Research Center for Distance Education and Technological Advancements in 2014 with funding from the U.S. Department of Education, Fund for theImprovement of Postsecondary Education, at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. With the end of grant funding in December 2019 and lack of bridge funding, DETA was launched as a non-profit start-up in 2020. DETA conducts and supports rigorous research from the course level to cross-institutional studies for all educational institutional types (K-20), with a particular focus on traditionally underrepresented students. In 2014, the National Distance Education and Technological Advancement (DETA) Research Center at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee (UWM) was launched with support of a 1.48 mil grant from ED FIPSE. DETA's primary activity was to conduct cross-institutional data collection with 2-year and 4-year Institutions of Higher Education (IHEs). The original partners on the endeavor included UWM, University of Wisconsin System, UW-Extension, Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC), and EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI). The original objective of the DETA Research Center was, and still is, to promote student access and success through evidence-based online learning practices and learning technologies. Since 2014, DETA has expanded their work to partner with IHEs, community organizations, technology companies, and foundations throughout the U.S. and across the globe. We collaborate on empirical research efforts to identifying institutional, instructional, and learner factors that influence student success, and we have worked to identify and implement research-based practices to ensure success for students with particular attention to underrepresented students.Visit uwm.edu/deta to learn more about our grant activities.

Previously Measurement Research Associates, I led the launch and operations of one of the first global medical and dental specialty board computer-based testing programs (CBT) with Pearson as our partner and our computer-based testing exam provider (including exam creation, coding of exam and associated images for CBT, policy and guidelines, client relations, reporting, and more). Also, I was responsible for exam and item development consulting often for criterion-based testing using the Angoff method, job task analysis and exam blueprint creation, quantitative and psychometric analysis of exam data using Winsteps application and the Rasch model of measurement for a numerous clients, and reporting of findings.

I taught a variety of courses and supported faculty in their research and use of technology while working on my doctorate. These courses included human communication, public speaking, organizational communication, communication technology (first completely online course), organizational technology, and conflict and negotiation. Teaching included complete new preps, to teaching existing courses, to supporting faculty in large lectures. I also supported faculty in using Blackboard to enhance their courses and in analyzing quantitative data using SPSS.

As a graduate student, I worked to support faculty use of technologies in their courses. My efforts included participating in the University of Wisconsin System TA/Faculty grant project, which was the first System effort to explore technology for teaching and learning. These efforts included researching and reviewing course management systems (CMS; now called learning management systems) and the selection of the first CMS for the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee, a System leader in these efforts. The efforts continued into exploring hybrid and blended learning.

I researched and developed web content to support people with disabilities in a variety of areas. I also developed and maintained the website (HTML, etc.), mediated communication channels (asynchronous discussion boards and email), and databases (Access). Moreover, I worked to build the NHU community and support individuals in locating resources and connecting.
