Research in the Jensen lab involves flow chemistry, reaction discovery, and application of machine learning to synthetic problems. We worked closely with collaborators in the pharmaceutical industry and MIT's computer science department for development of useful machine learning models in application to drug discovery and synthetic route planning.

My Ph.D. focued on reaction development, target synthesis, and computational investigations of BisAMidine (BAM) organocatalysts.- Developed the first enantioselective CO2 capture reaction that uses a Brønsted basic catalyst to stabilize an unfavored carbonic acid intermediate. Mechanistic insight to intermediates and substrate-catalyst complexes were investigated using pKa titrations, ReactIR, and 19F DOSY.- Developed a new enantioselective nitrogen cyclization that produces cyclic ureas (5 and 6 membered).- Applied the urea cyclization methodology to a small-molecule target synthesis that requires the stereocenter set by this methodology.- Used DFT calculations to aid in substrate-based new reaction development. DFT studies also led to rationalization of substrate/product binding and hypotheses on stereochemical influence of the hydrogen bonding BAM catalysts.
