Working with a great team that helped create a great preventive medicine residency for Wisconsin and the world. Teaching future health care leaders (residents and undergraduates) about population health and public health.

As the first Chief Medical/Health Officer at a growth stage start-up, I built a team and assessed the clinical and benefits impact of virtual coaching, initiating a category of pro-active behavioral and mental health support for all. I influenced and executed product and sales strategy thought internal cross-functional influence and external relationships, as well as market and scientific knowledge.

As Walmart's first full-time Chief Medical Officer, designed and managed comprehensive clinical COVID-19 response and all health initiatives for all associates and customers across Walmart’s 5,000+ stores and X distribution/fulfillment centers, including customer/associate testing, immunization, and internal/external communication. Led clinical model design for Walmart Health, a whole person,multi-disciplinary clinic, consisting of primary care, dental, optical, hearing, behavioral health, lab, wellness, and insurance, leading to rapid development for national scaling.Led patient quality, safety, and clinical analytics to support 4,600 pharmacies and 20+ Walmart Health facilities.Designed and delivered clinician training that supports health centers (primary care, vision, and dental) and pharmacies.Led clinical design, innovation, and operations for dental clinics, health centers, pharmacies, audiology practices.Provided clinical guidance for healthcare innovation efforts evaluating devices, monitors, telehealth providers, and other technology from Big Tech to international start-ups, leading, for example, to our COVID testing partnerships for our associates and communities, health passport products for our associates and customers, and improved wellness content.Provided clinical leadership for company-wide opioid stewardship, including pharmacy response and protocol establishment, and written and in person responses to government officials, agencies, and other organizations.Established Community Health Worker program within Walmart Health to address social barriers to patient overall well-being.Awarded annual Walmart Leadership Award, 2021.

Provided analytics subject matter expertise and clinical direction for strategy planning, product development, marketing, and sales, to provide solutions for health care systems in risk-based contracts and on the path to value.--Played a critical role in a new company launch. Developed and crystallized the vision for the new company, and led the internal communication effort to C-suite and corporate board.--Integrated and coordinated a sophisticated analytics engine (Anvita Insight Engine) and interoperability platform (Certify Data Systems’ Health Information Exchange) to create and launch new company, launch product, and initiate first pilot. This enabled full support from parent company and drove parent company strategy for integrated care delivery.--Led innovation strategy and efforts, creating next generation analytics and insights platform, and presented to C-suite to further subsidiary’s position as innovation leader.--Authored dozens of articles, blog posts, and podcasts in support of parent and subsidiary companies. This supported positioning companies as leaders in care delivery, finance, and technology innovation.--Created intellectual property strategy and selected outside IP counsel from among several top firms.--Created and participated as sole physician member of enterprise-wide analytics executive committee. This committee created analytics strategy for parent company and spread culture of analytics collaboration.

Worked with a team of innovative physician-informaticists to sculpt data into information and information into knowledge to help physicians, employers, health plans, and others provide the best care to individuals and to evolve toward risk-based contracting and value-based care delivery.--Developed and created engaging, physician-focused tools to support population health management at the point of care. These tools supported corporate internal (e.g., nurse and pharmacist) workflows and external (e.g, physician and quality manager) workflows.--Led clinician-informaticist team through post-acquisition phase, with no attrition, into a new product development phase while supporting parent company deliverables.

With a passion for delivering wellness and well-being solutions to individuals and employers, and with a desire to transform healthcare delivery, I worked with all of Humana's well-being assets. I worked to change the landscape of American well-being, health, and healthcare for a national health plan at a critical strategic juncture.--Provided critical strategic, clinical guidance to HumanaVitality, the company's flagship wellness offering. This allowed the wellness offering to become a Medicare-compliant program, supporting corporate expansion in Medicare Advantage.--Integrated all of Humana’s well-being assets in the service of creating lifelong quality-of-life for our clients.--Developed an integrated care model, fusing analytics from Anvita Health to drive care delivery at Concentra, incentivized wellness at HumanaVitality, and behavioral health at LifeSynch, as well as life coaching at HRI.

Directed efforts to control healthcare cost and improve quality for Human members; manage trend and quality improvements; represent Wisconsin Market at external events.• Served as lead clinical liaison for the Business Health Care Group (BHCG), a coalition of employers who use Humana as their exclusive administrator, delivering utilization and clinical program analysis.• Made and leveraged strategic partnerships with various Humana leaders resulting in innovative programs including Healthier Generation Benefit (multi-market childhood obesity benefit), relationships with external stakeholders (e.g., Wisconsin Association of Health Plans (lobbying) and Wisconsin Medical Society (advance illness planning)), and key roles in Humana’s physician quality measurement and reporting and shared-decision making evaluation.• Led efforts in several statewide projects such as value-based, data-driven cardiology payment reform designed to reduce unnecessary practice variation, lower costs, and improve quality (with former Wisconsin health secretary), the Wisconsin Health Information Exchange, and the Wisconsin Health Information Organization.• Chaired Wisconsin Market clinical operations and trend committee meetings, creating reporting format emulated in other Humana markets.

Patent prosecution, emphasizing mechanical arts and medical devices.

Provided medical direction to health plan, incentivized wellness program, and value-based benefit design/care management program. --Provided medical direction for an employer-owned health plan that included innovative wellness and disease management plan design, reducing QuadGraphics’ health spend by 30% and increasing quality of care.--Directed Quad/Med’s relationship with Dr. Don Berwick’s Institute for Healthcare Improvement (Triple Aim Project), providing ongoing data analysis and report on population health, medical costs, and patient experience of care.--Frequent spokesperson for QuadMed across various media and in person at various national and international wellness forums (QuadMed highlighted in a Commonwealth Fund Publication).--Delivered full service adult primary care, conducted pre-employment physicals, DOT physicals and was Medical Review Officer (MRO) evaluating pre-employment and post-incident screenings.

Patent prosecution and litigation with emphasis on medical testing and devices.

Provided direction for national foodborne illness surveillance network, working closely with health departments across the country and reporting results to federal regulators (FDA, USDA). Supervised field-based epidemiologists and preventive medicine residents and taught introductory epidemiology to new medical officers. Conducted and published studies on foodborne illness, chronic diseases, occupational illnesses and injuries, and public health policy. Represented agency nationally and internationally through written and spoken presentations on a variety of public health issues.

Learned and performed field epidemiology for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health; investigations ranged from infectious disease to ergonomics and indoor air quality.
