Tom is the Senior Associate Director of the Initiative for Global Security at the John Sloan Dickey Center for International Understanding. The Initiative advances Dartmouth's contributions to international security through research designed to improve policymaking, promoting direct engagement with foreign policy-makers, and inspiring students to explore careers in international affairs. In his role, Tom serves as the administrative lead for all Center programming related to international security, including the War & Peace Fellows program and the Rosenwald Postdoctoral Fellowship in US Foreign Policy and International Security, as well as event and conference planning, the distinguished visitors programs, internship partnerships, outreach and communications, strategic planning, and budgeting.Tom joined the Dickey Center as its Associate Managing Director in January 2014 and served in this position until the summer of 2021. In this role, he helped oversee the Dickey Center's day-to-day operations, including its communications, finances, and extensive programming. He also acted as a liaison between the Dickey Center and other Dartmouth organizations to facilitate cross-campus collaboration on programming, research, and other initiatives. From 2014 to 2018, he served as the Administrative Director for Dartmouth's Mandela Washington Fellowship Program of President Obama's Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI). Over these five years, the College welcomed 125 extraordinary leaders, from 38 African nations, to Hanover to participate in six-week institutes on Business & Entrepreneurship. Prior to joining the Dickey Center in 2012, Tom spent six years with the Institute for Security, Technology and Society (ISTS) at Dartmouth as its Associate Director. At ISTS, Tom managed daily operations, funding opportunities, outreach initiatives, student grants, summer programs, conferences and a speaker series. Before joining ISTS in 2007, Tom spent ten years working for Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) in Washington DC, where he was Assistant Vice President and Assistant Division Manager working on projects for the Defense Department, Intelligence Community, and several other government organizations.Tom received his BA from Siena College and his MA in National Security Studies from Georgetown University.
