I have 40 years of experience as a professor and administrator at NC State. I got involved in technology for education early in my career, first establishing computer labs in the ECE department, later co-leading the development of the Eos/Unity computing environment (based on the MIT Athena and CMU Andrew projects). Prior to retiring from NC State after 40 years, I served as Senior Vice Provost for Academic Outreach and Entrepreneurship, overseeing the university's learning technology infrastructure, continuing education, and nationally ranked entrepreneurship initiative.In 1988 I developed, on the side, the world's first graphical spreadsheet for Unix systems, which at the request of GE I developed into a commercial product, Xess. This led me to become interested in technology entrepreneurship and in 1993, with support from the National Science Foundation, I established the NC State Engineering Entrepreneurs Program (see http://www.engr.ncsu.edu/eep). In 2008 I was selected to lead the establishment of the NC State Entrepreneurship Initiative (http://entrepreneurship.ncsu.edu) which provides experiential learning opportunities for all NC State students to help prepare them for entrepreneurial careers.
