Today, more than ever, we are on the cusp of a shift that will change education forever. This shift is made possible because of revolutionary discoveries made during the ‘decade of the brain’ where insights and innovations allowed us to discover some of the most delightful inner secrets of the human brain. I am grateful to have been part of the research and implementation of these new discoveries that improve education by working with the brain for over 40 years as a cognitive neuroscientist. Through my decades of teaching and consulting, I’ve helped teachers understand concepts like working memory, amygdala hijack, conceptual change, cognitive load theory, exercise, nutrition, and sleep to make learning fun and effective for all types of learners. I work to translate laboratory research findings into practical teaching methodologies that align with our brain-based pedagogical model called the Challenge Mosaic.This model delivers powerful improvements in classroom techniques for teachers and facilitates all learners who easily reach their potential. Teachers are the first to say that these results are always significant, and often breathtaking. My goal is twofold: First, to eliminate labeling, stratification, and public shaming in our modern school systems. These are restrictive practices based on a two-dimensional worldview of learning. We need a much wider view of learning to keep up with the challenges of our modern times. Second, to increase teacher capacity with professional development through a cognitive lens so that neuroscience informs classroom practice and processes.There is nothing more fulfilling than witnessing a young mind leap into difficult and challenging problems that are fun to solve. When we take away labeling and stratification (what UNESCO refers to as ‘credentializing’), by scuttling the limitations of grades, high-stakes testing, public shaming, and odious competition, something magical happens. We unleash children’s innate curiosity and learning potential so the brain can do the job it was designed to do – be a natural learning machine.We are approaching a new horizon of learning; an epoch that will lead to social advancement, self-actualization, and personal fulfillment. If we continue to work to understand the brains and lead children with brain-based methods, the next generation will have the potential to leapfrog mankind into a more knowledgeable, empathetic, and connected world.
