About Tim Read

I never planned be a product manager.I started my career as a front-end developer because I loved working on user interfaces. I was excited to know my code was used by millions daily. I also was thrilled to know it helped musicians I knew make a living.One day, a manager asked me if I had any interest in being a product manager. I was relentless in advocating for users, and it caught his attention. I’ve always loved solving peoples’ problems, so it seemed like a fun opportunity. I didn’t expect that one decision would turn into a rewarding career. I learned that while I loved creating compelling experiences, I also was energized by digging in with customers and finding out what made their business work – and what needs weren’t being served. I learned about event ticketing and merchandise fulfillment. Understanding customers’ businesses, I was able to launch and iterate on features that ultimately drove 50% of Topspin’s revenue. I’ve never lost my customer focus. At Wiredrive, I coupled qualitative customer insight with quantitative goals. We wanted to remain relevant in an increasingly mobile world, and we relaunched our collaborative review & approval system. My work drove 3x more mobile use, and increased overall pageviews by 66%. Shortly after launching this, our closest competitor acquired the company. In subsequent experiences at Awesomenness, Blockdaemon and Meta, I’ve used metrics to drive a clearer understanding of business context and goals. I’ve personally built dashboards and used them to drive prioritization decisions, progress reporting, and to support a macro view of business health. I’m currently interested in teams that work cross-functionally to drive great product launches. I don’t believe product can ship in isolation. Tight collaboration with sales, marketing, business development, support and legal is a must so the customer has a single, coherent, and satisfying experience from day one. I’m also interested in continuing to grow as a leader, and providing guidance and mentorship to other product professionals. I didn’t plan to be a product manager, but looking back, I can’t imagine anything as fulfilling.I'm always looking to grow my personal and professional network.
